SEV Marchal alternator wiring

I have just bought an old boat fitted with a Volvo Penta MD17C motor. The alternator was missing. I have found an old SEV Marchal A14/35 alternator which matches the bracket. But, I have no wiring diagram for it. It looks to have an external voltage regulator (black plastic box saying 14V), with 61+ output lead. The other terminals are D-, B+ (x2), DF, D+/61, 61+. I don't understand why there both a 61+ terminal and lead. The DF is connected to the regulator.

I do have a wiring diagram for the original MD17C alternator, it is from e.g. www.bluemoment.com/manuals/VolvoMD11C_D_17C_D.pdf. I am very confused as to why, in this diagram, the terminals D-, 61, DF, and a mystery terminal between the cooling fins, all appear to be connected and earthed!

If someone can set me straight with the correct wiring, I would be grateful. Many thanks.

I have the same problem. The wiring diagram in the manual does not fit the actual configuration. I cannot find aq wiring diagram for an SEV marchal external regulator anywhere on the net. I am wondering what the relationship between DF and 61+ is. Both are going to my regulator.

Do these diagrams help, from a Volvo car manual

(they actually show old electromechanical regulators but they where superseded by solid state ones)

I believe it would be possible to fit a combined brush box and regulator and so do way with the remote regulator if you wished.

A decent auto-electrician should be able to help you out

Should have added that the DF connection between regulator and alternator will be a white or green wire, the earth/D- will be black and the 61 / D+ connection red or brown.

The charge warning light may go to a terminal on the alternator rather than to the regulator

thanks,
The diagram makes sense. the D+ on the rergulator is actually labelled 61+ like the one on the alternator but the colors you listed are correct.
Ill give it a try and let you know.

re SEV Marchal Alternator A14/35

I have one of these on my Volvo MD11 in my Westerly Centaur. You may be being confused by the built in diode isolation to feed two batteries. plus an additional diode to feed the regulator which I'm fairly sure is externally mounted. If you need more info just ask.

thanks, had not gotten back for feedback yet but it is the correct diagram. it allowed me to understand what the mysterious 61 and DF terminals were for. Finally solved all my alternator problems!
