Setting up a new Yacht Club

Can anyone avise me on whom to approach when setting up a new YC. I suspect our new club must be affiliated, however, I know not to which sailing organisation. Any advice would be most gratefully received.

The club is for a group of friends who have been together for 2 years and our going our separate ways, however, having competed in the last Fastnet on a Farr 65, and done most of the RORC races last season, we fell we should keep in touch, and come together every 3/4 yrs to take part in a classic ocean race - in what we hope will be true 'corinthian style'.

Any help will be most welcome.

Toby Gray.

PS See our Fastnet Website at www.hotyacht.com (I don't think we atr trying to flog anything on it, so I hope I am clear to plug it here on this board)

For the sort of informal activities you are planning, I am not sure any formal structure is needed. However, if you are planning on forming a 'proper' club, with subscriptions, officers, etc, then you should contact the Royal Yachting Association (RYA), which is the National Authority for most watersports in this country. It will be able to provide you with a specimen constitution. If you plan on holding races or teaching, then you should become affilliated to the RYA. This will require certain standards to be reached. Contact the RYA on 02380 627400 or visit their webside, www.rya.org.uk

Like James Jermain, I doubt if your club requires RYA approval. If you do go down the "proper" yacht club route, I suggest that you e-mail the Secretary of Liverpool Yacht Club via their web site "http://www.lyc.org.uk/". As a newish club they have been through all the RYA rigmarole within living memory.

I think you are better off staying a virtual YC. Simply make the AGM/Annual Dinner the first Saturday of the Southampton Boat Show at your favourite Hamble restaurant. Then give everyone the password to the web site so that you can ftp your holiday pics.
