Hi

I have a Bayliner 265 with a Diesel engine and it is only used on a fresh water lake.
I have had the boat for 18 months and have not had a service carried out yet, but I do check the oil.
I have asked our local marina to give me a service estimate.
How much would you expect to pay and what would you expect them to look at and service?
The boat runs fine and does not have any problems.

Your outdrive is probably more in need of a service. The engine is relatively easy, change oil/filter every year, plus the fuel filters. Make sure the fuel is brimmed over winter, so little chance of condensation in the diesel, and hence the diesel bug. Check all drive belts, coolant and if she stays cool enough on a hot day, then the cooling system should be ok. The outdrive needs a service every 2 years on a freshwater lake, with new bellows, hoses, and oil. Anodes will last 2 years as well, these should be magnesium on a freshwater lake. Unless you are really competent at mechanical work, it is best to get a recognised technician to service the outdrive. Cost should be £350-£500 per drive depending on the drive and the technician.

we need a bit more detail on the engine and more importantly the make and model of the outdrive.
depending on previous (last years) service and the age of the boat the engine will need oil and filter change, andes, engine fuel filter and primary fuel filter and probably air filter and crankcase breather and a new impeller depending on age/hours. Thats all pretty easy to do yourself if you are handy with a spanner. Takes about 2 -3 hours

The outdrive may need new oil and new rubber gaiters and clamps and very importantly anodes. Don't skimp on the outdrive - they need lots of love and attention to keep them happy - if water gets in them or you get fishing line in the shaft seals it can do a lot of damage if left. If you leave the gaiters too long and they split a lot of water will come into the boat. To do the outdrive the boat will need to come out of the water. time to do @4 hours if all the bolts come out easily.

Not just the engine needs service but also the sterndrive. The boat needs to be in the water for the engine service and out of the water for the leg service. You don't necessarily have to do both at the same time.

Budget £350 for the engine service and £650 for the sterndrive.
