we just had a Suzuki DF70 (so a four stroke), eng oil + filter & gearbox oil service for just over £100 here in Poole. Saltwater Solutions, nice guys and good service.

Don't know where you are but we used a Fareham based outboard dealer for our much Smaller Mercury 2 stroke and was a lot less even though we hadn't had a service on it for years . You don't say when last service so maybe your quote reflects dealers fears it's bolts are frozen solid for example?

i`m up in sunny Glasgow :-) i`ve only just bought the boat and motor, it performed really well on the trial so i`m not overly worried about , just thought it best to start off with a nice service but at over £ 300 !

Try Stirlings Marine, their yard is in Linwood, easy reach of Glasgow, I use them to service my Mercury outboard and a Jetski, very reliable, honest and reasonably priced:

As others have said Do it Your Self. It will be quite simple, rewarding, cheaper and you will learn how to do it for other years. Youtube is your friend here

Just a quick word of warning on DIY servicing of those old 3 cylinder motors. Make sure you check the thermostat as the top cylinder can overheat if not seen to. The engine mounts could be starting to get tired as they get older, another well known problem. As others have said, get a professional to give it a good service and check over as this is your 1st one, just for peace of mind.

The cost of the parts:-

1 x Impeller and gaskets £25
3 x Spark plugs £10
2 x Gearbox drain seals £1
1 x Fuel pump diaphram kit £15
1 x Fuel filter £5
1 x Pre-filter £5
1ltr Hi Perf G/box oil £10

If the service doesn't include these items, it's not a full service.

When ever I see posts like this they make me smile particularly when they use the word Professional. What I think people mean is 'taking the engine to an individual or indeed firm that you pay to have something done for you'. Unless you are sure of the quality of work they carry out I would not rely on the word Professional. If however you do it yourself (and servicing a 2 stroke is quite easy) you know exactly what and how well it has been done.

Get your hands dirty and learn it is all part of the boating experience

From my times with outboards the service was straight forward but if anything needed doing with carbs that was a job for a
someone who knows what they are doing, especially where there was more than one carb, I found a couple of good guys who I trusted and they always used to get her running well, not every one is out there to rip us off there are a lot of good people as well. I used to take the view that when I had paid someone to carry out the service I would go to the slipway, launch and have a good day out without problems, not turn up and launch then start tinkering to get engine to run right only to give up a while later and go home again without having our day out.
