Seriously, could this be the way to have entertainment on board?

laptop + usb freesat tuner + dish + this = a great evenings entertainment.

You can buy a phone with this integrated (google: galaxy beam) which could then also double as your navigation equipment (navionics etc)!

I like it when a plan comes together!

I didn't tell you how to spend your time, I just expressed surprise that you would want to faff around with stuff like that. And no, I don't often watch films at home either, unless the grandchildren ask me to.

My lappy only works in a handful of anchorages when I am on the boat so it is often just left in the bag. I don't fret about it, cos my batteries last longer & it saves me using my engine.

Bit touchy & defensive aren't you? And why shouldn't I say how I enjoy my time too - or is it only your opinion that can be expressed. If so I apologise & withdraw my contribution to YOUR thread. :D

Chill, if I can annoy you so easily without even trying you are a prime target for Trolls!

"MF24, Don't you have any books on your boat? Or chat to your partner sometimes? "

I'm neither annoyed, nor unchilled, nor touchy, although i can see why you might perceive that... Quite the opposite in fact - and I can't see defensive. I actually suggested that i was jesting to a degree, as may you have been.

However, in the above quote, you weren't merely saying how you spend your time, you were suggesting how MF24 might spend his time, rather than entertaining himself with films etc..

To me, it didn't look like an expression of surprise.... It looked like "you don't wanna be doing that! You wanna be doing this"

I have no axe to grind with you on this, or any other topic. IIRC you are not a particular proponent of this type of thing, so perhaps your post was a poor choice for me to express those particular feelings, but it's a free country, and a free thread to all, so it was to you I responded.

Enjoy your books etc. I'll be enjoying TV, chatting on the Internet, and a complete absence of SWMBO - bliss! :)

I don't see any need for films. but we do have a pack of cards for REALLY persistent bad weather.

I don't actually, I do prefer sitting and watching a movie on the laptop on the boat as it's the only real time I can do it without being interrupted! :D

I spend a lot of time reading whilst at sea, to pass the time, so I don't tend to do much whilst at home.

No partner either, I sail solo most of the time! :D

Ok - I'll admit it. I've tried it and it is the business for a night-out-in. I don't have the one featured but a slightly more expensive one by Philips that does have some gigs of storage and will take an S/D card (32 Gb in my case with 30 fea....

Thanks for that seakindly, I'd like to have the ability to watch films when moored up somewhere. It's good fun watching The Cruel Sea, tucked in a bolthole when the rig is whistling and the boat is rocking. Really get's the atmosphere going!

A much more appropriate answer than mine :)

I can understand how you took it that way.

After reading the post I did realise my orginal viewpoint was wrong and adjusted accordingly :D

Mount on masthead and project moving map onto sea surface!

:D:D:D:D:D

More seriously make the chart table top from a thin sheet of white perspex and project the chart onto the back of it?

Like, um, a chart? I suspect a cheapo android tablet would do a better job. These things have a minimum 'throw' so the projector would need to be around your feet!

I can see the value in sail-training - both in recalling events of the day (remember when we did that MOB, saw that mark etc) and in sharing some sailing vids. I guess you could use it with games machines too with kids but part of the reason for going to sea is to escape that sort of thing. But films? Master & Commander? Nothing to beat it with a glass of rum and rain beating down outside....up and at 'em me boys!:D
