Serious question#2. DSC VHF!

Having gone through several back issues I've sort of decided on a Furuno FM2721 on the basis of an excellent review and it's the shape of the space I have left! Can anyone comment and is there a newer version of this radio on the market as the back issue I've got it from is two years old.

For those of you that are interested I've plumped for the Ramarine RL80 crc 10" GPS colour radar chart plotter with Raystar 120 satellite differential receiver and 7" L760 High colour fishfinder as my repeater. I've probably got this all wrong as the nice young lady from Raymarine was far too intelligent for me to understand properly and probably guessed this when I asked "Can you send me a picture!"
 
Easy

Go for the most expensive one, with the most switches, dials and display. Whatever we say, that's what you are going to do anyway!

There was a recent YM report. I'll dig it out. NASA was best buy, but at £260 its too cheap for you!

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. If that was the case why have I gone for the Moody 38 now when I have the perfect excuse to buy a 47 next year 'cos there wont be anything smaller with less "Pretty lights!"
I do like buttons and I do like pretty lights though! If you're not careful I'll buy a bloody Sunseeker, moor it next to you and play Tekken 4 all night with the deck speakers on! (Incidentally, I hate video games!)
 
EPIRB
Electronic Position Indicating Radio Beacons

Several types
but basic idea is if you fall off the boat(if you've got a personal one such as the Guardian Manoverboard Watch ) or the boat sinks the EPIRB breaks free and is automatically triggered. This send an alarm and indicates your position whilst wife & family sail off into the blue yonder.

Different things
DSC sends an alarm & indicates position at that point.

EPIRB continuously transmits when activated. HH may be OK if in Liferaft with it and someone within line of sight.

If overboard then personal EPIRB may be useful as you've probably forgotten to grab the HH when you slipped.

you couldn't get a suneeeker next to jeremy's berth not enough room now when he moves to a better part of the marina you will be able to but you may have to deal with the ex sbs types that hang round portsmouth harbour masquerading as MoD plods who jeremy will of course call on the vhf he knows how to use...he will call them to give you protection from the rest of us bertholders who will be looking to exact traditional punishments on you but oh you might actually enjoy that!!!!!!!!!

Furuno DSC is a nice bit of kit and mostly logical to use. Have a look at the new ones from Simrad, i've been waiting for 9 months myself to have a gander, i think they are now out. The dummy sets that i've seen have larger screens and digits. As the system works similar to SMS texting the important points to consider are: can you read the screen, how easy is it to operate and does it just need one antenna.
