SERIAL PLUG WIRING

Am worried about a "serial plug" Do you mean RS 232 serial interface plug, either 25 pin or 9 pin. If so whats it being connected to? Some systems use a software protocol called xon/xoff to limit data transmission so only requiring 3 pins to be connected. Others use a hardware protocol, which means more than 3 wires and can mean up to 5 or 6. The more info the better

Sorry, I wasn't particularly clear. I meant a 9-pin RS232 serial plug. It is to take the feed from a Garmin GPS. Problem is the existing plug is moulded, so it is impossible to see which colour of wire goes to which pin.

Easiest is to buy a lead with the right plug on one end, then cut it in half. The lead that is! It doesn't take long to establish the continuity of nine pins with a multimeter or battery/bulb affair. There are several 'standards'!
Maplins, CPC, Farnell, RS, tandy Rapid Electronics, ebay are all likely suspects for a lead or a plug. I've been lucky with ebay for leads, just look for a good deal inc P&P.
Good luck!

Maplins or RS for the bits .. If what you are connecting to has holes for the pins to go in then you need a male plug ( Obvious ) Cut the cable . Strip back the covering to show wires . Strip wires . Then with your meter check which pin is connected to each wire .. Pins are numbered .. You can google RS232 Connectors for Pin Numbers .. Male and female are oposite ways round ( Number Wise ) Did it yesterday at work .. Takes about 5 mins .. If you dont have a meter battery and bulb would do .. If the plug is a female one then you can use a bit of wire . 30 amp fuse wire or an old resistor .. Have fun hope this helps .. Most of the manufactures want you to buy their leads at very over inflated prices .. They also use very very very obscure only available from us connectors .. /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Hubby has a box with loads of old broken serial mouse in. He cuts the serial lead of them and uses the lead for various things including GPS connection.
