He was injured

Yes, unfortunatly Jim had some sort of fall in the wee hours while departing Farewell and badly hurt a rib, if not worse.
Besula had decided sat morn not to go to Tarbert so stayed back and assisted Jim.
I spoke with him sat eve and he seemed much better and was at home.
I will be phoning him shortly.

:D:D:D:D You'd think you would know better at your age
After telling Jim you would take him as well, mind you I don't know if he would remember.

Anyone up for the Millport Fireworks this Saturday?

We are going to measure up a few things in the flat but dont think we will be staying late on sat.:(
May see you there during the day if you make it.

All on board Mistral had a great time at Cumbrae, being part of the winning quiz team was the icing on the cake.

We had a lazy start on Saturday before a great short sail to Port Bannatyne Marina, managing to dodge the rain showers en route.

A wee siesta, then the bus into Rothesay. We couldn't get a table in the Little Italy restaurant because it was fully booked till 9.30pm, so went next door to the Chinese which was excellent.

Motored back to Kip on Sunday in the sunshine before our crew continued their road journey to Tayvallich with their empty boat trailer.

An excellent weekend, and looking forward to spring 2012.

Ash

Negresco's report on SB weekend

The weekend started on Thurs evening when my son Bob and myself headed up to Negresco's mooring in Loch Riddon. After a good night's sleep we were preparing the boat to set off for CWC when I noticed a slight problem - one side of the Avon had completely deflated during the night. I first thought that we had holed it the previous evening scraping the bottom off the shore with two of us and all the provisions on board. I managed to tie it alongside and pumped it up so that we could get ashore and effect some repair. On shore there was no sign of damage or noise of escaping air so I assumed , rightly as it transpired, that some grit had stopped the valve sealing it when I had pumped in some booster air when we arrived the previous evening. Ok so back to Negresco and set off for CWC at 11.30am.

The wind got a bit frisky on the way down the East Kyle topping out at 25kn in Rothesay bay when the helmsman seat decided to give up the ghost and come loose from its fixings. The seat was then relegated to the rear cabin floor while autohelm billie steered and my son took a nap in the forward cabin.

As we were into the teeth of an east wind, it took us until 3p.m. to round the North end of Cumbrae where we werefestooned by the mainsail which had broken away from the halyard. As the in mast reefing sail has full length vertical battons it was a bit of a nightmare to deal with and when I finally got it under control and strapped to the boom the waves were still breaking over the empty CWC pontoon so I headed for Largs marina. There we topped up with diesel and water and got the mainsail off and stowed in its sailbag.

By the time we headed for CWC, Capricious and Miss Sable were tied up on CWC and HB was on her way there from Fairlie. We tied up then helped those arriving after us.

It was interesting to note that Gordon had installed bow and stern thrusters (or was that a Sports Centre rib) - he needed all the help he could get to get FTA alongside the inside of the pontoon in the east wind. Once we had FTA tied up, the pontoon seemd a good bit calmer in the waves !! but what about having to walk the plank ?

Then my good lady, Isobel, joined us off the 6:45 pm ferry from Largs and she kindly brought Geordie the pooch with her :-( We pooled our tatties and steak pie with FTA's chilli beef, rice and chapatis and joined Gordon and Alex for a scrumptuous meal washed down with a couple of bottles of red wine then headed off to the SB bar.

Danny's quiz was good fun and we enjoyed some great craic and some sangs and clatter (more clatter that sangs!)and a few jars.

Negresco's crew headed to bed and 12 leaving the stalwarts to head for FTA.

Next morning I made an attempt to fix my mainsail problem but couldn't get the shackle off the bottom of the foil as it had corroded in so had to abandon using the main. Managed to get the helmsman seat fixed back in place and then set off for Tarbert at 13:30 and after a magnificent sail/motor sail with the genoa and mizzen, arrived Tarbert at 17:15pm to find an empty space on the west pontoon, generously vacated by a yacht just as we arrived. Visits to the Vic and the Frigate then back for a reasonably early night leaving Bob out on the town.

Bob took his guitar along to the FTA shindig but sensibly left well before the 4a.m. closing time !!

Great music from the fish quay to send us off on Sunday pm and a beautiful afternoon's sailing back to Loch Riddon with Bob catching mackerel on the way. Great weekend and the 16kn to 25kn winds we enjoyed on all three days were perfect for heavy displacement boats like Negresco and FTA.

Photos to follow.

I think it is fair to say Fairwell (aka FTA) had a good blooding at the weekend in more ways than one.
Problems in manoevering a long-keeler? I laugh such talk. Easy peasy if you have your personal rib to shove you onto the pontoon.
Thanks to Dan for the quiz at CWSC... our team's dismal failure was due to the thrash against the flow coming down to Loch Riddon. Honest.
Thanks too are due to Geoff and Michael from Escapade who helped with the beat up Loch Fyne on the Saturday. The look on Michael's face when the mainsheet shackle broke was something I will remember but apart from losing half an hour on the repair there was no harm.
Eamonn was a star in organising the victuals in Tarbert and the tip that we should abandon to Frigate for the Vic to see the Democrats. A hoot.

The party on FTA was worthy of a fine company... even the 3.30am gatecrashers from next door. I later learned there was a mobo jockey wandering around in his jammies complaining about the uncouth schemies making noise in the early hours... but he was nowhere near us. Fancy going to a music festival and having to put up with ...err, music.
Sunday was a cracking day for us. Alex (Eillean) and I had shed the Escapaders and were doing 6.5kts down Loch Fyne with a tacking beat back up the West Kyle touching 6.9 at times. Alex had to get back down the road so I had Sunday night on my tod on the mooring. Monday was rubbish in the morning so I got my newly acquired DSC VHF talking to the GPS watching the rain.
That, and cleaning up the saloon from the excesses of Saturday/sunday.
Back up tomorrow (Thursday) and will be on the boat until Sunday. If anyone is in the Kyles, give me a shout.
Pics will follow after I get back next week.

Stuart, Jim is still a bit sore but recovering fast and calming the pain with somethingcodine thingamyjigs.

Hope you are feeling better now after your wee episode.
Are you intending going to Rd this winter?

Might be woth mentioning to anyone who intends using the CWSC (Cumbrae water sports centre) pontoon that one section of the concrete pontoon on the south leg has seperated by aprox 4ft distance and out of line by half pontoon width.
A temporary planked bridge is in place but not guaranteed to stay put.
I am sure it will be sorted by the next sb meet next april.:)

Afraid the time has come for Hb Besula and Emma to retirt up river for the winter.
Next sat we will sail to Holyloch for the night and up to Rd on the sunday, a very sad time of year indeed.:(

While here, Myself Brian and Charlie would like to Thank you Ericka for the fantastic Dundee cake you shared with us on sat morn, it was scrumptious. well done.Thanks.

Sadly Geoff,s (Escapade) mum passed away sometime during sunday afternoon, probably while we were on passage from Tarbert. Sorry for your loss Geoff.

Every year it seems to come round quicker and quicker.
Hope Jim recovers quickly and well, does he remember much about it?

Yes he is fine, although his memory doesent seem to cover that particular time, you sure he dident fall from the top of Farewell,s mast and hit his head on the concrete pontoon:confused::D
