Still going south currently in Corsica for winter

The last job (I hope) I have to do before going around to my new mooring is to get Shady up on the hard and remove the old paddle wheel fitting, fibre glass the hole then put the new paddle wheel fitting in.

two questions

I want to do the job myself so I need a good instruction book (tried the west system video - NBG in my opinion) any ideas?

& the new Nasa clipper log has a plastic fitting....not overly happy with that, anyone fitted a metal thru hull fitting?? if so were can I get a fitting to suite the paddle wheel OD dim.

Hello!

I found the following book gave very comprehensive practical repair advice:

Allan H. Vaitses "The fibreglass boat repair manual" 1988 McGraw-Hill
ISBN 0-07-156914-6 (£14.26 from Amazon)

Another, more general book about marine composites, written by someone who has loads of 'real-world' experience, and writes from a practical point of view is:

Hugo Du Plessis "Fibreglass Boats" 3rd Ed 1996 Adlard Coles Nautical Ltd
ISBN 0-7136-4290-4 (£17.99 from A & C Black Website, but a couple from Amazon at 12 quid)

I am absolutely no expert on practical repair of composites at all, I am just an academic doing research into marine composites (more experimental - 'I break plastic'!). Both are definately not scientific books, very hands on. The first is much better for instructions for repair, but I liked the second one a lot as it (IMHO) makes good sense from my scientific/eng point of view and is free from some of the 'rather strange' things I have seen written about composites. I also like the fact that the guy seems to have an attitude!

Hope this is helpful

Leigh

There is a place in Plymouth which specialises in fibreglass not far from the yachthaven. I have an excellent booklet produced by them some time ago, well worth contacting them.

Look in Yellow Pages for :

Scottbader
Strand Glass

Both give good GRP products to buy to do the job, plus they issue booklets, give courses if so interested etc. etc.
