Hi everyone, I need to get to the innards of my Selva saildrive . I've got the (very limited) manual in hand but was looking for any tips or suggestions before I start. Unfortunately the main plug at the prop end (part 12 in the manual) has become stuck and won't fit back in. I've ordered a new sea prop 60 but it's taking forever to arrive so I'm gonna have one last go at sorting theSelva problem out. Any handy hints would be most appreciated!

Perhaps because one of the O rings has become displaced an is now preventing the re-fitting of #12 ???

Selva saildrives were fitted to Beta engines and so, depending on what model, Beta might be able to help you. They are very good to deal with.

I have found a 24 page Selva Saildrive manual with breakdown diagrams and part references but that may be what you have already - PM me if you want it.

Yes that's a distinct possibility but since the thing won't move at all I probably need to strip it down from the top.

Thanks, I have PM'd you.

I have a Selva saildrive, where do you get your ring andes from? I get mine from Beta and they are very expensive, so always n the lookout for a cheaper source(y)

I'm afraid I use Beta too. What do you do if something goes wrong with it? Do you know any mechanic who is happy to tackle them? Most refuse to touch them.

The local Beta engineer is more than happy to do any work (Marinepower Woolverstone), in fact I have never heard of anyone refusing to work on them and would guess that any Beta agent would be fine working on them.
His opinion of them was that they were a good unit and sturdily built. Even bettter when a separate water intake is fitted. (like most saildrives i suppose)

I've asked 2 separate Beta representatives in Kent, and both refused to do any work on it.

Did you get any further with taking it apart? What is the problem with yours?

Mine has just started to have a problem which I think is the dog clutch. As soon as you put much power on, it jumps/clunks every 15 seconds or so. OK at low speed and in reverse.

I found an old thread on here which suggested you couldn't just drop the lower part of the leg to get to the shaft.

If it comes to the worst with mine, is the SeaProp 60 a pattern replacement for the Selva? Or at least is it possible to fit without changing the moulded bed?
Hi, yes I’ve given up with the Selva and ordered a SeaProp 60. (Looonnng delivery time)I’m waiting to hear whether I need a new bed but at the moment it looks like I do. A bit of a nightmare these discontinued Selvas!
and you’re right, you need to disconnect a few things from the top before taking the bottom apart but beyond my capabilities.

Thanks for that. At least there is an outboard bracket on the boat already so I have a quick option if needed.
Will be interested to hear how you get on. What was the problem with your Selva?

Which the prop off, trying to change the seals, the cylinder with a faceplate that connects to anode came out halfway and hasn’t moved since. I’m guessing something fell or had corroded at the back of said cylinder but I have no idea. And everyone who’s had a look at it refuses to touch it.
I’ve been thinking about an outboard , but going down this route first. I’ll let you know how I progress. (It will be slow)
