Selling your boat.

Also, anyone got any ideas about the legal side of things in a private transaction?? I recently bought another boat via a broker who handled the whole thing, and there was a formal 'bill of sale', albeit a standard form (RYA?) which both parties had to sign. Is this a legal requirement in a private transaction, or just when a broker is involved. At this point I'm trying to sell "prophecy" privately, so any information would be very helpful.

Many thanks.

PS Sorry you're taking a sabbatical Jim - we did that in 2002 and it lasted approximately 6 months. Whatever you do, don't go to Brittany for your hols - too many boats around.

A piece of advice I was given which I followed was to take the spare kit off the boat to make it look tidier & bigger i.e. spare sails etc, spare fenders out of lockers etc, maybe take the rubber duck home.Good luck.

If you've got any contacts in the music industry I would try getting in touch with Elton John cos I heard he's just bought a couple of new jets and is looking for a Bennie to make the set...................

A formula for success

Jimi - you may remember that I sold Corsair successfully and quickley without a broker - and for the price I wanted. This is how I did it.

1. Use www.myboatdetails.com to display your boat details
2. Advertise in Yachting Monthly on line (and in the mag - optional) and put a link to your details above.
3. Wait for responses.

Preparation
1. Remove ALL clutter from boat - absolutely everything - apart from a bottle or 2 of wine etc to show vital stowage
2. Clean everything - make sure everything is fresh smelling - so heads and things need special attention - the weaker sex will not buy a smelly boat.
3. Once clean inside - take loads of digital photos but do get hold of a large flood light (500W things people have to light their patios (terrace to some)). This makes the photos come alive. Brokers have not got time to do this properly, so if selling through a broker - take the photos yourself - and don't be rushed.
4. Carefully list all equipment
5. List anything that is faulty - honesty pays - it will be found in the survey. On that note, when you come to do contracts - exclude known faults from survey price hagle in the contract.
6. Presentation Presentation, presentation.......

Good luck

Chris
