Selling Targa

I want to upgrade from a Targa 37 to a Phantom 40 or a princess 42. Think a change from sports cruiser to flybridge is about time. I have a couple of options:

1) trade-in for new boat. Yes will get decent trade in value but the depreciation on the new boat is ridiculous

2) Sell targa on brokerage and use proceeds to negotiate cash deal on new or even 2 year old boat. downside is i pay borkerage fees of 6-8% but have some flexibility. may take some time though

3) sell privately. downside - how the heck to do this?

I am thinking option 2 at the moment for the flexibility it provides, but how long should i expect it to take to sell the boat if i price it (a) where all the other boats are shown on the websites or (b) a realistic price of 5-10 k below the broker asking prices for the boats

How important is spec vs price for selling the boat? Whats the best way to go about it?

lots of questions! sorry - help appreciated!

I advertises Piccolo in the free add in "boats and outboards"

within 1 week I had 6 enquiries and 3 definite viewers. Piccolo was sold within 2 weeks, (subject to survey). I also paid £120 for an advert in Boats and Yachts and as yet I have had no phone calls from this source.

Im on the market for a Targa 34. Do you know of any good ones for sale?

you can post free on various sites, eg www.marineeurope.com

PS I have a phantom42 for sale, details here . It is in the Med, 20mins Nice Airport, but I will pay for it to be trucked back to UK if anyone who buys it wants it in UK.

What is your targa worth as a private trade in against mine, and where is it lying?

I know of an excellent 34 in our Marina because the guy is upgrading to a 48 and came to see ours, just so he could see what they were like. (He wants a 2000 year sorry Deleted User, I did try)

Next time he is at the Marina I will get his details and PM you.

I would avoid the p/x route unless you're desperate to change immediately and, as you say, have money to burn on depreciation. I've tried selling boats privately in the past through ads in Boats & Yachts and MBY but I've never had any success. There are problems with this selling route as well. You may find yourself schlapping down to the boat at short notice to wait for potential buyers who dont turn up, you need to agree a form of contract and how to hold the deposit, if any. Personally, I think that buyers of £100k+ boats look to buy through a broker for security and, as a seller, its helpful to have a good broker on your side
But, and it is a big but, you need to find a good broker for your type of boat. IMHO, you need to place the boat with brokers specialising in Fairlines and it is always a good idea to moor the boat in the broker's marina - some brokers do free mooring deals to facilitate this. It just makes it easier for prospective buyers to view your boat. Regarding the 6-8% fee, most brokers will be flexible on their fee if there is a deal to be made. I would have thought a popular boat like the Targa 37 would sell quite quickly if the price/spec is right

Spec vs. price is important when getting purchasers to make enquiries and come to view but condition is everything when an offer is made and a survey undertaken.

I know it sounds obvoius but you would be surprised at how many well specced boats we look at that are are in a shocking condition through poor maintainance and a lack of TLC.

Others comments re brokerage seem fair and location is important.

Personally, I couldn't comprehend spending 6-12k on someone to sell my boat. Needless to say, I'm only 30 and have just stretched myself to buy my first motor cruiser, and for the time being, would not have that sort of money to play with.

Anyway, IMHO, you should try and sell it privately, If you have no luck, go down the broakerage road. I personally enjoy selling boats, cars etc, when you make a sale, it's great feeling knowing how much money you have saved.

It really is down to your personal finances. But, if you are not desperate to get rid of it, it's got to be worth a try.......Marine mart, boatsandoutboards, apollo duck, etc. try them all and see what happens.

Also, it sounds like your boat is a good'un, so have confidence in what you are selling.....I'm sure it will sell if the price is right. (wish I could put in an offer for it....maybe in a few years when the stock market changes).

Where is the boat lying? If UK a private winter sale will be very difficult.Would suggest that the buyers of this type of boat do so on impulse during nice summer etc.People who plan winter purchase of boat(ie me) do so to get best price,so not good to sell now from your point of view.
If boat in Med suspect you will def need broker,he will add his fee on top of your asking price.Chum of mine has just sold 1999 Targa 37 for 125K.Had A/C but not much else.Sold in about 4 weeks to somebody who owns factories in USA and Germany.Still had lots of grief extracting payment from purchaser.

If your still selling after all this advice then send me PM & let me have details of your boat.

I am looking for T37 or similar, but as Oldgit suggested might be the case - I am hoping to save a few quid buying in the winter.
