Advanced age means I’m thinking of selling my nice Hallberg Rassy 29. I plan to do a private sale but might consider a broker. Any recommendations in the Clyde area?

I’ve never actually had dealings with DDZ at Largs despite emails/phone messages about a couple of boats I was interested in. They didn’t seem particularly ‘proactive’.

When I bought my boat 18 months ago, Sunbird who are based in Great Harbour and Clyde Marina (Ardrossan) were the broker and they were really helpful from my perspective as the buyer. Another option may be MS&P (Michael Schmidt) who have an office in Rhu.

Having had a bit of a problem with a local broker I sold the last boat through Euroyachts, they seemed to have catchment of potential buyers and were happy to either have the boat in the marina at Largs or later to allow me to continue to use it and show it to the clients they sent. It always amazes me that so many buyers only want to deal through a broker even though it costs them more. When I was buying the replacement I looked at boats with Euroyachts at Troon and Largs, Boatshed at Largs and Schmidt in Kip, not a lot to choose but I favoured the service and standard of presentation from Troon though in the end I finished up buying through a broker in Bangor.
DDZ were involved in the commissioning of a new boat we bought (quite a long time ago), did not seem too interested but then they are more in to mobos.

Just to add, the stories of a moribund market are not reflected here, the boats I have been assisting though the Canal recently include three newly purchased on delivery to Wales, London, and Ardrossan so it suggests smaller boats are selling. Since I only helped about 7 or 8 last month that is a high proportion. Of course in other years we get newly purchased boats going the other way on delivery from the Clyde to Scandanavia,

You might also consider Transworld Yachts, who live and breathe all things Hallberg-Rassy, and have an excellent reputation. I bought my HR352 from them, and their service was great.

If you'd prefer to sell privately, I'd suggest you set up a basic website full of photos and information, then link to it in your ads. That's what I did when I sold the 352, and I had buyers falling over themselves to look at the boat.

I wouldnt bother with a broker. A private sale using the internet nowadays gets a lot of viewers and potential buyers. I recently bought a boat in Wales through a broker (im in Clyde too) and to be honest when questioned he admitted he had never actually seen the boat and passed my number to the seller to deal with.

You could do worse than to chat to Mark Cameron of MK yachts based in Lochgilphead. I have not bought or sold through him but enquired about a yacht he had on brokerage and was very pleased by his level of input and detailed knowledge.

When it came to selling my last boat, I advertised on Apollo Duck as well as a French, Dutch and German website.
Also put it up for sale on Facebook.

Much to my surprise, the post in several Facebook groups attracted the most interest.
The man who eventually bought her, contacted me after seeing her advertised on Facebook.
No cost to advertise, no commission, ...
Put her up for sale Nov 17th, concluded the sale Jan 24th.

Had her listed in several groups:
Yachts & Yachty bits for sale (Europe)
Yachts for Sale (UK, Sailing)
Facebook Groups

Another vote for Mark Cameron.

I have worked with him on a number of occasions. Very professional, knowledgable and likeable.

I sold my Hardy Pilot via an eBay ad. The ad went in on a Sunday, I’d had a call to view the boat by the Tuesday, the chap appeared on Saturday to view her, handed over the cash and left with the boat on its trailer a couple of hours later. Like most things, if you’ve priced the boat properly it’ll shift Facebook have a number of pages dedicated to selling boat or you can use their marketplace. No costs and simple to do..
