Selling a boat - Greece or U.K.

After 4 plus years we are seriously thinking about selling our boat, the decision is whether to sell her in Greece or sail her back to the U.K. to sell. The Greek market appears flat at the moment.
The journey back would be another enjoyable trip, although this time we think we would sail it to Southern France and have it transported to Northern France. We would probably do this Spring next year and may well have the rest of the summer sailing Southern England, as a last farewell.
We want to be very realistic about the price as we do not want her sitting around deteriorating when we do come to sell
Would appreciate any one's experiences or comments reference this whole idea, good or bad
 
Faced with the same dilemma a couple of years ago I opted to bring back to UK. Selling a boat in Greece if you are not here is very difficult as the main market is people like you looking to either move there or have a holiday boat while still living in N Europe. Nothing happens in the winter, so you have a small windows at the beginning and end of the season when buyers are active. Miss a sale then and you are put back another year.

Not actually sold my boat yet - no real need to, but they do sell fairly easily, particularly, I think (hope?) to somebody wanting to do the trip the other way.

The drawback of course is the cost and wear and tear of the passage back, and would support the trucking idea. I sailed to Spain and trucked back from Sant Carles to Poole. Initially i had a professional crew and the cost of the complete trip by sea would have been similar to half sea half truck. Of course if you are not paying somebody, costs are less, but you still have the fuel and marina bills, plus going north in the Atlantic can be hard work.

Might be worth talking to John Rodriguez (jonic who posts here) about the potential market.

Lots of the yachts we have delivered back from Greece (and other parts of the Med) have been for this very reason. Especially with the changing Euro rates you would most likely do a lot better selling her in the UK.

I know that Affinite II was sold in Levkas within a fairly short time of going on sale but the amount received was a good deal less than the asking price. Although probably a better deal, in time and money, than bringing her home. Might be worth a PM to Steve?
 
Putting your question in reverse, when I was buying, I noted that very similar boats, VAT paid, in the £100,000 range, were some £5,000 to £7,000 cheaper when on sale in the Med compared to UK.

I eventually bought one which had been shipped to UK from Palma, where it had been unsold for a year. In UK the asking price was £5,000 higher . . .
