A good friend is, sadly, no longer fit enough to sail, and wants to sell his boat. For a variety of reasons, he isn't really capable of dealing with it himself, so I'm considering helping. As the price will be well into five figures, I'm thinking that a broker would be the best way to proceed. If it does happen, I'll have questions about that later.

I assume I'd need some sort of document to allow me to act as his agent to commission valeting and what have you, and deal with a broker. Would I need anything more complicated than a letter from him asking me to act on his behalf?

I wouldn't be paid and the boat is in the UK.

Thanks in advance

I have recently-3 years ago- sold a boat, and another six years before that.

IMHO, presentation is very important. If, as you say, selling is too much for your friend, presentation probably is too.

Perhaps a pro valet and ensure all systems are working and the bilges are dry. Being " On the Button " always fills a prospective punter with confidence.

John Rodrigez is one of the yacht brokers who comes recommended by many, including First Mate and I.

Good luck.

Well worth repeating, and emphasising.

He sold my Dad's boat for us in similar circumstances. 10/10 for service and generally being a top bloke too.

I wouldn’t have thought you would need much formally to commission valeting - provided you or the marina have access to the boat keys. The main issue here might be how you ensure payment to the valet company.

For the agent, ideally (ie if the owner is sufficiently mentally well enough to confirm and sign) the contract would be directly between the owner and the broker - even if you do the preliminary research and agreeing in principle the arrangements.

What is the make and age of the boat you have to sell for him? you never know someone here might be interested.

I expect the OP is avoiding the accusation of trying to advertise the boat on here, which is against the rules.
There is a place for that on the forum.

Going back to the original question - I would ask a reputable broker the question (John would be one such) I am sure they have encountered this issue before and can advise on how to proceed in a transparent and legal manner.
