I have the most un-enviable problem. I bought my boat with my farther, we both have a 1/2 share. I trail it behind my Disco, and as its about 17+ ft, it takes at least 2 to handle it, launch & recover it. Last year, I noticed my old man was not as interested in using the boat, it spent more time down the side of his house being tinkered on than is healthy. This year its even worse, I had to trail it from Manchester to Anglsey on my own (twice in fact) without his help, he just doesnt seem bothered anymore.
What do I do?
Do I sell her (she's worth about 10k) and buy something smaller & Cheaper?
Do I put her in a marina and bite the bullet on the fees (at least I can use her without having to have help to launch her)?
I realy dont want to sell, but I cant bear to see her sitting in a field in Anglsey going to waste.

A 17ft boat should be manageable single handed. I used to have a 17ft bowrider with 100HP Suzuki that I kept in a yard at Porthmadog, only 100 yards from a slipway. This cost me £200 to keep in the yard for the summer season. Getting the sequence of launch / recovery right is the trick to single-handing a boat like this.

Don't sell it, just re-work the way you store and handle it.

Why not join a club? There are three boat clubs on the west coast in range of Manchester. A boat of this size is easy with a rollercoaster trailer. You are taken down to the waters edge by tractor and launched, for recovery the tractor is brought down to you, the boat should easily winch on straight from the beach if your trailer is set up properly. Then you are towed back up to your vehicle. Take a ride over to Little Bispham (cleveleys) on a Sunday and have a look for yourself.
Or look at www.fbac.co.uk. Seems a shame to downsize a decent boat because of struggling.

Yep, I agree with the other guys.

Change the way you run things. Find a yard on the coast to store it, maybe dry berth it? I don't know if you have the luxury of that option up there, but it does away with the worry of trailing. Yes you can trail but the concern re the extra trailer maintenance and wheel bearings etc, apart from the pillocks who try to walk between your car and boat, are worries you can do without.

I trailed for years, and the 90 mile runs each way at the weekend ARE an added stress you can do without. The other thing is that maybe your pop will make more use of the boat if there is less hassle, perhaps that is what has put him off.

There is another option and that is sell the other half share to somebody more compatible, with your own ideas and timeshare it. This can be difficult but it is not impossible.

If my choice I would start by moving the boat to the coast, but keep it covered up and keep it somewhere secure. Remember £500 of vandalism is dead easy to inflict.
Good luck and enjoy the summer.

I aggree with Davey_s about beech launching at Clevelys.. but if you do decide to put it in a marina, they don't come much cheaper than the North West Coast - especially Preston or Fleetwood..
