Self Build Boat Design Companies advice

It’s fair to say building from scratch is one way to loose the love for it before you start, many abandoned projects around that people have started with blinkers on and little concise ration for the amoubt of time, money and skill it takes to build something from scratch that you will be happy with. I’ve gone another route, bought an older boat that meets our specs but requires some maintenance and upgrading, I’m doing this each winter and enjoying it in the summer but I was very fortunate to find a boat that was built how I would do it, it will be a few years before I’m ready to cross oceans but by then il have the boat I want to do that in, plenty of good cruising boats around that just need a bit of work, the hard bits avoiding the basket cases

Hi KaraMel

I am a long distance blue water cruiser who has lived aboard for extended periods in the Med, Caribbean and USA. I am also a blue water yacht broker so have seen many home build/ owner managed projects and I have to say some of them have been amazing. Predominately they have been built in steel but I have also come across some outstanding professionally built Ferro boats and some excellent Aluminium boats.

There is no doubt you can create an exceptional vessel this way.

But....... I have also seen people embark on a 2-3 year build project that has then slipped to 10 or even 15 years!

Sadly when this is the case, often time has run out, age has caught up and the trip is not undertaken.

If you want a bespoke and customisable yacht, buying one of these finished projects could be a solution.

Here are a few examples we have had of varying materials, some now sold but lots of pictures and details to give you an idea of what can be available.

Best of luck :encouragement:

And I doubt ANY of them could be home built for the asking price. I did do a double take when I saw the name "Golden Fleece" - my mind went immediately to Poncets, who I referred to here http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthrea...ck-injury-Cannot-get-up&p=6556925#post6556925 . Their yacht is also Golden fleece - but she's a lot bigger!
