Selden Masts - Serious production error!

Not the first time Seldon forestay fitting welds have had problems.

My 1987 Baraccuda lost her forestay with geny etc in a F4 due to what is known as chicken **** welding , ie no penitration of the weld into the two parts being welded together on the forestay fitting on mast. The weld was just deposited on the surface.

The dipstick surveyor appointed by the insurance company insisted it was old age failure, and rang up to rant at me for claiming without even going on the yacht until I pointed out the facts of life to him, got the mast taken down and sectioned the fitting myself but thats a whole new saga.

You're OK, some Beko fridge/freezers happened to get a bit warm and self ignite. It was some that were produced a few years ago so your new one should be fine !!

They put out a fully fledged recall for some older models, but only after a fire in London claimed 3 lives. They had a very inconspicuous recall before that. New Beko's are probably OK, they do seem to have an upgrade program to avoid repeat problems.

There are some other white goods manufacturers who have similar problems, but have said nothing at all.

all seems well until you try making a claim. Selden first suggested that our fitting was not the one affected now says that the forstay loading in not enough to require changing the fitting - when is a crack not a crack?
