seizing a Kong.....

Are the swivel ones any good? Or should you use a fixed type?
I would always use locktite if I didn't want the screws to come undone.

Well I use the swivel type and it's been almost fine so far. The "almost" refers to the fact that that the jaws are now very slightly splayed (< 1mm and I'm persuaded that it's still just OK) following a difficult recovery after anchoring in a F9). I am thinking of adding an additional swivel at right angles, probably along the lines of Alain's much posted rigging toggle idea.

which part would you like to attach the wire to?

Don't know about yours, but given the difficulty (almost had to hammer) I had in assembling mine, should the pin come loose it wouldn't budge /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

oops, that doesn't sound right. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

it was because of the shape and thickness of the metal around the anchor eye (the anchor stock thickness almost "fills" the Kong jaws), the two Kong halves had to be... encouraged to mate

I am sure this does not happen with anchors like the Delta, whose stock is not too thick

Just bought a Kong from the boat show. Seem to remember the blurb (not to hand at the mo') advises 'grease regularly' - presumably not compatible with using Locktite

I have been carrying out some research into this topic, following comments last year that Loctite might not be water resistant. In the 2006 season I did not Loctite my Kong swivel or associated shackles but checked them periodically. The swivel was found loose on two occasions.

During the 2007 season we anchored every night for more than four months, for up to four days continuous at a time. I Loctited the swivel and shackles at the beginning of the season and checked them a few times through the season. They always seemed to be tight. After haul-out I undid them all and found them to be tight, I estimate as tight as if I had just made them up.

Can someone do me a favour, please? I would like a scanned copy of the Kong packaging, especially the section on rode loadings. Unfortunately I have mislaid mine. Would be most grateful. Thanks to anyone who can provide.

coming from a mechanical engineering backgound I did use Loctite as it seemed to me to be the logical thing to do with this type of fastener. I didn't use the full monty stuff but the medium strength one. I just wanted to know others experiences or opinions before I chucked my Delta(no problems fitting the Kong to this) over the side.

Vic, dunno if this helps. From this website.

Chain Dia. SWL Lbs. Break Load
6-8mm 1870 5500
8-12mm 4400 11000
12-14mm 6600 20900

Obviously, this is for the 3 different sizes of swivel.

Unfortunately no. I know the breaking loads very well, I destructively tested a lot of them for YM. The info I would like gives figures for the force at different points in the rode, i.e. at the swivel, in the chain, at the roller. Kong promised to send them to me together with the calculations but nothing came of it.

Jeeeeez, you guys will pay anything.. ! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Just get a bloody great swivel from the trawler guys in 316... and Yes, it will go over any decent roller...
Mine is a 13mm swivel Trawl Lifter /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif (2 way) 35 euros.. built like an Accrington Brick Outside Convenience...
