Security/ camera forreversing

OK, so is this a new approach to PBO requests for help - difficult question, no easy answer, so let's answer a different easier to answer question. Interesting, but not much use to the OP.
Actually, there is an easy answer, see post #6 ;)

Shame the OP hasn't been back to the forum since he posted the question on Weds.

The OP already mentions a security camera - don't blame people for following his lead.

If you have a better answer - why not share it.

Point taken. On first reading it wasn't obvious to me you were suggesting these for reversing.
I have a Raymarine camera pointing aft on my boat which could be used for reversing. I can view it on an MFD display on the flybridge. Truthfully, I don't use it. For me it's just a distraction. If I'm looking down at that, I don't see what else is happening around me and my spatial awareness is compromised. I didn't have such a camera on my previous powercat and I always thought one would be useful but now that I have one I think otherwise.

Motorists reverse. Sailors go Astern!🥴:ROFLMAO:

But

Whereas you can buy reversing cameras, easily, a google search of 'asterning' cameras draws a blank - and at the end of the day - all that's needed is a waterproof camera (and many security cameras meet the spec). If this is a common need, an asterning camera - it could find a new use for security cameras - rebadged - and prices increased to fit the market. (:

In the meantime I look forward to reading a professional AI treatise on Wiki for the new term 'asterning'

The Tapo cam that we have in the saloon is there for security, keeps the Mrs happy. It ca be viewed on a phone or tablet, or over the Internet if connected to a router. One of their outdoor models would do what the OP asks, total cost £17 from Argos.

I have a security camera on the underside of the radar arch, but this is primarily there as a rear view mirror (i don't use it for docking, for the reasons you give and visibility from the flybridge is very good). The reason i fitted this is because visibility aft isn't very good from the lower helm, it's sometimes handy to look at the camera, which is viewable from the chart plotters. I think this one cost about £25, but it doesn't have WIFI, it connects to the video in on one of the plotters.

You invented the term. It is "Astern" no "ing" about it. :ROFLMAO:

So guy wants a 'reversing camera' so he can see what he's going to hit. Does it matter what that camera is as long as it does that job ?

I think I have provided a reasonable solution to the request ... its even solar paowered - so no need to wire it up ! In fact why not have it clip on for use .. unclip after ?

Will it do the job? How does it connect to his ipad? Does he need to have an onboard WiFi network or does the camera have an inbuilt network? What level of latency is there between the camera and the ipad? I don't purport to know any of the answers to these questions. Maybe they're not even relevant. I don't like to bs about things I don't know enough about.

"I don't like to bs about things I don't know enough about." ............ Well stop asking about this then ... and I will assume that comment wasn't an oblique reference meant to be me ...

If you go back to my original post - I did give the comment "maybe on a boat" ..... it was a SUGGESTION ... to consider ... and it seems others have similar .. Pauls Tapo .. Neeves etc etc.

Do you want to answer my questions rather than trying to tell me what I may and may not post about?

If reversing into a slip is an issue and the vessel is large then if Rainbow's idea that 2k is but loose change then the solution is something like this.

https://dockmate.com.au/

Dockmate has representatives in most locations with a marine presence and the system is de rigour for owners of Princess yachts, large Rivs, big motor cats etc. There is another, competitive, system - but its name alludes me.

I think what I’d do is extend our friend’s idea, and put a 4/5G router on board, and use Blinks. Everything is done for you that way, though of course networking it with a MFD would be impossible. An iPad takes about a minute to set up for it. And it’s black friday soon, a multi pack of cameras can be had for the price of a bottle of plonk.

He asked for a "security/camera" with WIFI, that he could view on his iPad to assist with docking. Not £4K -£12K security system 🤣
Are you just prescient or do you know he does not hanker after a security system. In view of the unknowns, we don't know his vessel, we don't know exactly what his hang ups are, we don't know where he keeps his vessel etc etc.

It costs me nothing to offer options, I like to help people, spark their imaginations. If my posts are of no interest to the OP, I really don't mind. You and others might not like my approach - but you don't need to read any or my posts. The fact you do read them suggests.... maybe you are bored or you would put me on 'ignore'
