I have a budget of about 20k and have been looking at yachts although there isnt a lot around at present. Many seem optimistically priced and some examples extremely tired but still asking the same price as really well presented boats.

Brokers advise more boats are now coming onto their books but still quite low stocks. Newer models selling quickly . There is a feeling things may slow down a bit . I was curious what other peoples thoughts and experiences are.

IMHO Market still buzzing in the south here. Although I saw a few smaller yachts appearing from covid lockdown panic buys......but they needed a lot of work. One seller asked me why my friend was not interested after I looked over a yacht for her.
I said it needs a total cosmetic overhaul ! Start with the rotten tiller and work forwards. The ply seats were falling apart. MAKE an effort.....Use some paint !! (or halve the price and expect the buyer to do it)
My mate just sold a 37 footer for 20k more than he expected to get.......and bought a similarly expensive camper van......

Budget aside, what sort of thing are you looking for ? There’s plenty of us on this forum happy to tell you what to do/buy.

Actually after my friend started looking for motor boats it became very clear how sailboats are rather under valued.
He could not find anything for under £20,000 and they were poor. At the same time you can find sailboats with new engines and sails, new rigging and cherished by their owners for half that. It’s a quirky market but no a dear one.

20k was a difficult price point when I was looking for a non liveaboard, but it's a natural instinct to want something that you can't quite reasonably afford. Under 30' and you should be able to get something decent though surely

I have to say I finally think the next few months will be different. (Although I am always wrong!).

I am nowhere near on the breadline. But if my utility bills go from £1000 a year to say £4000 a year that is the discretionary spending cut somewhat. So I suspect some people who pay £4k a year in a marina will be selling up?

I will revisit this in six months to check.

I was thinking about buying over the winter but will hold off. Don't know whats gonna happen to my business. So uncertainty about income as well as expenses.

Budget £20k I'd be looking at all boats within size range up to £25k or even £30k on Apollo Duck (most brokers and private sellers use), also worth checking ebay and facebook if you're on there. Seems to me there are periodically some decent Moody 33s, Sadler 32/34's, e.g., for that sort of money. I think for £20k you can do better than the likes of an an old Westerly Longbow and agree that the market is likely to veer more towards buyers for obvious reasons so would not be in a rush at all but keeping a very close eye on what comes up for sale...

Hi a couple of months ago I saw a 1999 dufour 32 classic shallow draft for 30k which was a bit over my budget. Needed new saildrive gasket and sails were aged but I could have lived with that. Because I hadn't looked much at that price point i wasnt familiar so I dithered and it went within a week. Now when I look at 40 year old moody 31s at the same price and some westerlies 40 years old for mid to top 20ks it leaves me feeling a bit hesitant. I did see a fulmar for 15k original bukh but looked well cared for but a bit out of date electronics etc but I could cope with that and gradually improve things. That went within a couple of weeks. So I do think some sellers are being a bit more realistic .

Certainly the uncertainty of the energy costs going up creates a background that’s not conducive to spending money ona non essential thing and by its nature a continuing expenditure on mooring and maintenance
