Second hand boat market

50%? So my nearly new 2012 Viking 20 that's up for sale at £19950 that cost me £25k less than 12 months ago is only worth £10k?

Yes, mine's been on brokerage for only a few weeks but I'm down at the marina every weekend to wipe the hull and topsides, brush the carpets off where people have walked on them and clean the cockpit of muddy footprints. There's only so much a seller can do and the recent bad weather at weekends hasn't helped me.

Are you getting out, or trading up?

Your's will fetch more than £10k, you just need to see whats on the market, and be competitive. I would imagine £15k plus at that age.

You may be able to trade it in like I did. It saves on brokers fees, if you can find the boat you want!

Hello Deefor,

Just to set your mind at rest, I think I said this was a great time to offer 50% of asking price, because someone will say yes. That someone doesn't have to be you. My gut feeling is that you could hang on for around £15K or a touch more, but if you need to sell, you might have to take any offer you can get.

Anyhow, PM sent!

Just my 2pence.

Boats ARE selling and not just for stupid offers. It all depends on individuals circumstances. I am busy at the moment.......

Correct as always Sulley!

All you can do is present the boat in a proper and attractive order at the right price.

The 'right' price may require a little research, but buyers will usually:

1/ Select a size and type of boat

2/ Go on the Internet and see what's about

3/ View several boats and re-evaluate what they need/ want

4/ Go back on the internet, or just buy something that they like at the time.

Therefore, the more interesting or sensibly priced boats will sell fast. You may get a premium price if your boat is outstanding in some areas though...

Implying that some boats are selling for stupid offers then?

No, good boats are selling at good prices.

Boats that are presented well and kept clean are moving, it also helps to have paperwork and receipts to show the boat has been maintained with servicing, antifouling etc.
