Seatalk to wifi

Thanks for all the suggestions. I didn't make it clear that I need Seatalk 1 compatibility - I don't think the other solutions suggested provide this. NMEA is nice to have and might be useful, but Seatalk is what I need.

I think you did and I think they do. What was unclear was whether you needed N2K support which your kit as described would suggest you don't need. Perhaps a missing piece here is that tablet applications don't work with seatalk: those seatalk data need to be converted to nmea-0183 (not actually nmea-0183 because that's a whole stack protocol down to a physical layer which doesn't include wifi, but it's the application layer of nmea-0183 over wifi) before being sent over wifi.

Disclaimer: I own none of these devices myself but have a certain interest in the area.

The vyacht was a great idea at a fantastic price point but bitbaltic and PaulRainbow above highlights issues some people reported which googling "vyacht site:ybw.com" should highlight. There seem to have been no product updates in 3 years and the github repository seems dormant so before spending money a sales enquiry to check whether it's being actively maintained and developed might be wise.

I've never seen any online complaints about the miniplex. When marine electronics programmers started trying to "do" computer networking even the big manufacturers came up with some pretty shonky stuff, but I've seen nothing but sensible decisions from the guy who develops the miniplex and, fun fact, it was him, not the nmea, who registered 10110 as a standard port for nmea-0183-over-wifi (which, as stted above, is not officially an nmea "thing") with the IANA. Downside? €429 for the n2k/seatalk1/nmea-0183/wifi version, not a whole load less for the non-n2k version if you don't need n2k. So nowhere near the vyacht on price.

Not familiar with the box RivalRedwing references but it looks even cheaper than what would be my super-budget suggestion below...

There are far more cheapo (and not so cheapo) "nmea-0183-to-wifi" boxes out there so if you can convert seatalk-1 to nmea-0183 *before* putting it out over wifi you have more cheap options. If you can live with the C80 being on all the time, take an NMEA line out from there and feed it into an nmea-to-wifi device. Otherwise seatalk-1 to nmea-0183 converters seem rather over priced (the digital yacht one is over £100). The old ramarine converter still goes for £50 or so on ebay. AngusMcDoon used to be selling ones he'd designed and built for a fraction of that.

Whatever you choose, be aware of limitations of cheap and cheerful stuff. A box which creates a wifi hotspot but can't connect to an existing wifi network may be a PiTA.

No idea about the item you identify but have a look at this:

NMEA2WIFI - NMEA 0183 TO WIFI MULTIPLEXER WITH SEATALK INPUT SUPPORT | eBay

It is quite a bit cheaper. Seemingly out of stock but you might want to check with the seller in case more are on their way..

I have just ordered one of these direct from the seller which was cheaper to buy direct, £31 inc delivery, but it will come in kit form so you would need to be able to build and programme it yourself, usb via pc. It will work in both ad hoc or station mode depending on how you set it up.

The seller, an electronics engineer and sailor has designed the kit himself and has a website where you can get all the information on programming the firmware, setting it up, problem solving etc. plus updates to the firmware etc.
There is also the forum which you can ask questions on about the product.

He also makes a 4 port version including wifi which can also be setup to convert Seatalk 1 to NMEA0183 and also have bi-directional WIFI output/input.

His website/forum is: About Vela-Navega

There is also: https://www.quark-elec.com/product/qk-a027-wireless-ais-gps-receiver-with-seatalk-converter/ which will give you AIS as well for about £115 or https://www.quark-elec.com/product/qk-a031-nmea-0183-multiplexer-with-seatalk-converter/ no AIS for £100
