Due to a still throttle, I am changing out my throttle mechanism and cables on my Trapper 500 Oystercatcher. The mechanism is full of rust after years of leaks from the mechanism. I am trying to remove the mechanism, after removing the cables, and can see no way to remove the mechanism from the front. I will also want fit a new mechanism soon. there is a screw on the back of the throttle plate but this is rusted and I assume the parts must be separated to fit into this tight space.The hole is as per the dimensions on the teleflex side mount throttle.

Any ideas, thoughts would be appreciated. throttle mechanism.jpeg
 
Clear out the heads of the machine screws in the corners?

Have you access to the back of it?
Should be just a few nuts holding it on?

My old boat's was held on with self tappers that were somewhat rusty.

That's the exact same from behind. I have removed the 4 self tapping screws attached to the hull but the screw shown on the image is rusted and not moving - and is very difficult to access. I do have limited access above via the ignition panel. I still can't see how the mechanism either comes out either through the front or the rear. the large metal throttle plate cannot get out the hole.

If you look at the instructions at Instructions you will see that there is no necessity to separate the control head. Essentially you can 'wiggle' the head out from the front. Picture 7 and picture 6 show the head in its installed position. Picture 5 shows the control being slid to the side and one end of the face plate being pushed inside the hull. Picture 4 shows, in effect, the whole unit being pushed inside the hull. Picture 3 shows the body, having been rotated through 90deg, being tilted and extracted from the hole.
 
Thanks for the information. I realise that I have removed the lever while trying to remove it. I'll put this back on and hopefully that will give me the leverage I need.
 
It seems there are 4 screws holding thw whole umit onto the bulkhead. When I said clean out the heads , spray in wd40, work a little screwdriver around. Are they hex allen bolt heads? Star bolts, must be something?

Work at removing them, or getting the nuts off the back. Or drill them out. Or grind them off with an angle grinder if you must. Especially of the unit is junk anyway. If you're persistant and careful you will succeed.

Have a good look with a torch and small mirror to see what is on the back of these and remove.

On mine those four ringed in yellow are stainless bolts - check what is on the other side -

Check you are happy with the way the mechanism at the back is put together on the new controller - the first replacement one I bought had similar handle to the old one but was different at the back - held together with little circlips - when I pinged one off I realised how delicate it was - didn't want it pinging off out at sea - but I managed to find another handle type held together with split pins or split rings, like the old one - can't remember the makes - both reputable makes from a reputable chandler.
