Searching for owner of an Ovni 36.

Hi,

Can anyone help with information about the owner of the below Onvi 36?

It sailed from Cherbourg around 6.30 on 27th May and a number of people would like to speak to the skipper.

His name is believed to redacted.

He may have some like to Victoria Yacht Club on the Isle of Wight.



(sorry for the poor photo, we had other things to deal with at the time)


Sadly he did not leave details at the marina office, nor did he stop having hit three boats causing significant damage and with lots of witnesses.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Yes indeed.

He tried to go back to his berth, seemed unable to manoeuvre his boat despite a number of us being ready to take his lines (and fend off others) and proceeded to leave saying, "my name is redacted, the marina have details"

All three of the damaged boats requested details from the marina office who confirmed they had nothing.

Accidents happen to all of us, thats what we have insurance for but leaving without giving details was rather poor.

I guess one thing you can reasonably be sure of is that the skipper's name is not redacted.

I actually believe his name could be redacted or something close.

No vessel name as there was a tender hung over the transom obscuring.

Having done some research, a remarkably similar boat was listed for sale previously and there was a clear name but unsure if the name has been changed, or or perhaps the boat that was listed for sale previously is not the same... (it is remarkably similar with wear marks on the deck in the same place and the same halyards made off on the stainless rails in front of the mast.

The same vessel name is registered against a redacted with the Ovni owners club in UK who we have also asked for details.

Might be worth checking that name on AIS tracking sites to see if it was in Cherboug at that time?

I am being careful not to mention any names other than that of the name provided as the boat left the marina. i dont want to disclose the name of the vessel that we believe is the one open forum in case we are mistaken.

Good Shout on the AIS, we checked at the time and there was nothing transmitting.

Yes, it could be they didnt want to give details out but you would have thought three separate people asking and explaining the situation would have focused them.

perhaps he paid cash?

its not something i have come across before as whenever we go to a marina we are asked to leave details..

We have a few leads to follow up with but any extra info is gratefully received.

Sounds as though the marina are dissembling. I’ve never, ever been allowed in a marina without giving a boat name. Have the police been informed? If they suspected a ‘misdemeanour’ then they would have the power to make the marina give up the details. Also I imagine the insurance companies will want to know that the police have been informed. RYA legal department might be helpful?

It is funny the marina wouldn't have boat name and skipper details. Unless he arrived late after office closed a buggered of without paying as well

To be fair does he know there was damage.

Leaving my winter dock, Was rather awkward. It involved moving a boat alongside mine. then me moving ot out the raft past others and I intentionally lay alongside another vessel.
The harbour master and his assistant were assisting me so they have my details.

It wouldn't occur to me to inform other boat in circumstances where I came alongside with fenders intentionally with no damage. Even if it was Plan B. I might if it was Plan B but just as a conversation piece.

Are you sure about that? Is certainly true for RTAs but that is in the Road Traffic Act. There is no criminal offence committed by hitting another boat. It is a civil offence. Insurance will obviously want some supporting evidence (usually eye witness accounts) if they are going to claim from the other party's insurance. However lack of this would not affect payment of the claim to their insured if they have all risks cover.

For the avoidance of doubt, there could be no chance that he was not aware of the impact, had he stopped we would also have been aware of the extent of the damage caused. There was an amount of damage to the rail of his vessel as a result but little in comparison to the three that he had hit.

He had acknowledged the fact that he needed to pass his details on and appears to intend to do so by attempting to go back to the berth which he had come from but then changed his mind and proceeded to leave giving just the details that have been relayed here.

The two leads we had have stalled slightly with the Ovni owners club not willing to assist (despite the suspected vessel name being registered with them and the owners primary name showing as redacted)

So back to the drawing board. Ovni 36's are far from AWB's. We believe this one is based on the south coast.

As a previous owner and customer his I think you would find that Steven at North Sea Maritime (UK Ovni agents for many years & very nice / decent chap) knows, or knows of just about every British Ovni owner... maybe worth a call?
