Afternoon all

I am searching for a reliable outboard engineer in the Brighton area. Any recommendations please ?

I have been unable to take my boat out for about 10 months (medical reasons) but yesterday was all set to go and discovered I have a non-starter !!!

The outboard engine is a 2010 Yamaha 115hp which has been very lightly used since new. It is sat on the back of a Merry Fisher 645.

I made sure the boat battery was fully charged and had a jump start hooked up for good measure in case it was a bit sluggish "waking up". Made sure fuel side was all present and correct.

Although it would turn over nicely it would not spring into life, not even attempt to give a "lighthearted cough".

A boaty neighbour had a look and confirmed the fuel side seemed all ok but still no start. With neither of us having a clue about the electric side of things it would seem the attention of a professional is needed. Probably with his diagnostic computer !.

Apparently the fuses are ok.

Am a bit reluctant to hand it over to-in house marina mechanics unless I have to.

Any suggestions/recommendations will be much appreciated

Are you using fresh fuel? Kill cord in place and switch ok? No-doubt someone more knowledgable will be able to help...

Thanks for the reply

Kill cord in place and switch assumed ok. Not fresh fuel but am assuming it would attempt to do something on old fuel even if it never ran properly. There is absolutely no sign of an attempt

I wouldn't do anything until you have tried it with fresh fuel. I have had outboards stubbornly refuse to fire up until they were given fresh fuel, after which they started and ran just fine.

Any luck getting it started?

Apologies for delay in replying. Had to return home yesterday pm so will get back on it next Monday (fingers crossed).

I have a sneaky suspicion the immobiliser button on the key fob may be playing up. Will check that before I start draining and replenishing the fuel as there is quite a bit in the tank. I did add 20 litres the other day to bring it up over half way. Fuel tank size is given as 136 litres.

Will update you at my next attempt

Many thanks once again for taking the time to reply. Much appreciated.

Kind regards

That does sound like something worth checking. It may also be worth connecting a separate portable fuel tank with fresh fuel (e.g. 25l) directly to the engine, if that is possible, to avoid draining the main tank. Is there a fuel vent on your main tank that could have been left shut? Have you checked the fuel filters?

All the fuel side of things was checked yesterday which really does make me think it is the immobiliser not releasing. Fingers crossed it is just a key fob problem.

I take note about using a separate fuel source and if it doesn't leap into life on my next visit will try that.

The boaty neighbour who had a look was very surprised at the "newness" of the engine, including very clean oil etc etc. and is adamant it is nothing serious.

Will update on my next visit to the boat
