Motoring out of Porthmadog on Sunday, I saw the usual line astern of yachts returning to the harbour. Anyone who knows Porthmadog will know that it is bedeviled with narrow channels and sandbanks a-plenty! Hence the reason for line astern - exept for one bloke in his Oceanis 331. Nope - he wanted the whole channel to himself and was motoring on the port side. The gap between the line of yachts and his yacht was a good 30M, so no real problem. Slowed down and got the usual cheery wave from the yachtsmen that I know - but not the Oceanis skipper.

All I got from him waving fist and abuse about passing him on the wrong side. There was sand bank on his port side, so I rightly didn't want to go that way.

Which part of seamanship does he not understand? Most of it, clearly!

Back in the harbour he has a go at an elderly couple with their yacht, who were clearly having problems mooring against the out flowing tide - and again, those familiar with Porthmadog know how fast this race can be. They didn't need some fat, bombastic b@stard bawling at them, they needed a little help.

I felt it my duty to remind the git of his failures at sea, and to remind him also to fly a black cone while motoring (he didn't like that bit!).

So will the skipper of the Oceanis 331 who was in Porthmadog on Sunday lunchtime do the rest of us a favour and ...

a) go back to the RYA sea school
b) learn some manners
c) find another harbour if you can't do a) or b)

Rant over :)

Guy sounds a right tosser .. not the usual Oceanis 331 type who are usually sound as pounds! However I feel I mus clarify one wee point .. you do'nt need a motoring cone if you are motoring, you only need it if you are motoring with a sail up, I know you probably meant that but thought I'd just be pedantic!

To be totally truthful Jimi, you have taught me something. I thought the cone was to denote motoring with or without sail.

Could have been embarrasing! :)

More important matters Dave,

Did the two knobs do their stuff??

Ho-Ho!! Yes they did indeed!!

Should have seen her go!! Got out past the fairway and opened her up. She just went up to 44kts, no problem - and with more in hand, I'm sure.

When you consider that I am running 4 props with barnacles on them and corroded edges, thats not bad.

Wait till I get my new props :)

Knowing the thrill I got after getting mine to do 22 knots, I can't imagine how good it must feel at 44 knots!

If you had any doubts at all about the purchase, they must have been left miles behind in the wake!

I frankly thought you were wrong on that point about the cone only being shown when sails are up as well as the vessel being propelled by an engine - so I checked up.

The rule is:-
"A vessel proceeding UNDER SAIL when ALSO being propelled by machinary shall exhbit forward where it can best be seen a conical shape apex downwards"

So that amkes you totally correct and I thank you for pointing out the rule, which I along with a number of others I know have not fully understood.

Re: the cone - or lack of it!

So a sailing boat that has its engine running but not in gear or has a sail up but is not being propelled by it ("Solent rigged") doesn't have to display a cone. Personally I think that this is one rule that could be simplified to the benefit of both sailing and motor boats.

Re: the cone - or lack of it!

Yep - the way I read it such a boat does not have to sidplay a cone.

Its running engine can even be giving a visible exhaust but not in gear - the sails can be up but not propelling the boat - in effect the boat is drifting in this situation - no cone is required.

I t would be nice for raggies to have a simple automatic cone display sustem that they could show with the pull of a cord or the press of a button - in my experience very few, ever show a cone when being propelled by their engine with a small sail up, so anything that makes it easier should be welcomed.

This could all be simplified - I agree.

Re: the cone - or lack of it!

Ah but. That would give the game away and they'd have to play by our rules instead of theres. They would also have to learn to stear!!/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Re: the cone - or lack of it!

in reality, a vessel displaying a cone is saying "Examiner on board" :-)

Re: giving the game away

If a sail boat is head to wind and making way at about five knots, with no fore sail up, it is motoring /forums/images/icons/shocked.gif (with or without cone)! /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Seriously, If I am motor-sailing with the fore sail up, only boats to windward would see my cone. The only way that it could be seen from all points forward, would be if it were on the pulpit on a rigid pole.
