Motoring out of Porthmadog on Sunday, I saw the usual line astern of yachts returning to the harbour. Anyone who knows Porthmadog will know that it is bedeviled with narrow channels and sandbanks a-plenty! Hence the reason for line astern - exept for one bloke in his Oceanis 331. Nope - he wanted the whole channel to himself and was motoring on the port side. The gap between the line of yachts and his yacht was a good 30M, so no real problem. Slowed down and got the usual cheery wave from the yachtsmen that I know - but not the Oceanis skipper.
All I got from him waving fist and abuse about passing him on the wrong side. There was sand bank on his port side, so I rightly didn't want to go that way.
Which part of seamanship does he not understand? Most of it, clearly!
Back in the harbour he has a go at an elderly couple with their yacht, who were clearly having problems mooring against the out flowing tide - and again, those familiar with Porthmadog know how fast this race can be. They didn't need some fat, bombastic b@stard bawling at them, they needed a little help.
I felt it my duty to remind the git of his failures at sea, and to remind him also to fly a black cone while motoring (he didn't like that bit!).
So will the skipper of the Oceanis 331 who was in Porthmadog on Sunday lunchtime do the rest of us a favour and ...
a) go back to the RYA sea school
b) learn some manners
c) find another harbour if you can't do a) or b)
Rant over
