Seen groups of seals off W.side of Thorney regularly these last few weeks- sometimes 12 or more, rolling around in shallow water or on the sand.

If it's sunny, on the flood, between 3 & 4 m of tide & you've got a flybridge or can stand on the roof..... go up emsworth channel, past mill rythe & up to around the first two green markers - then look east'ish towards thorney island.

You need to be able to see over the first bank & look down to the shallows beyond -usually on the water's edge. if they're not moving ,can be hard to spot with 10X bino's, but are often rolling around on their backs, tails & heads in the air, some darkish in colour ,some much lighter (young ones?).

Presumably even better view from Thorney shore, but a long walk.

Marvellous.

So is that at the top end of the channel where the emsworth channel turns right to Emsworth away from Northeny, or a little lower down?

bit further south than that- the first two green markers you come to (or the last two if you're coming from emsworth)

Surely there's somewhere even further away that you could suggest- none in Yorkshire?

Hmmm

It was hardly a secret & "largely cause they been left alone... " ? for goodness sake

seals can be seen in Northney & chichester marinas (+ others?) each summer -they're not put off by a few boats ,or people looking at them with binoculars.

I agree - as a Northeny berth holder, everyone knows they are there, but not many have seen them in the Harbour.

There has also been pieces in MBM about them.

If they want contact with humans, typically they go get it – not the other way around.

Great to see the wildlife from a boat - totally agree. We have our boat on Loch Lomond at present and in Jan 2003 a seal was seen at Ardlui - the northerly point, some 35 miles from the Clyde estuary. Many attempts were made last year to capture and return it to the sea. The angling club even wanted to shoot it to prevent salmon and seatrout losses. However it is still resident in the loch and feeds readily on many of the 30 species of fish and eels present. The angling club have actually made it an honorary member. We have not seen it this year but have seen the following. ducks, geese, swans, ospreys, sea eagles, golden eagles, a peregrine, white deer, wallabies, helicopters, seaplanes, boats of all kinds and weather this year ranging from 80 degrees f to a hail storm last Sunday. Definitely one of the beautiful locations to be on the water. Roy
