Looking for a bit of advise, we are putting my mates Sealine 215 cruiser back in the water at the weekend, it is powered by a Volvo Penta 5.0L petrol, He was hoping to have changed the boat to a new Regal 2465 Diesel by now but has not yet been able too.
There are a couple of issues i have ;
1, at the end of last season the day we took it out of the water the throttle cable jammed full on, which made it very interesting trying to get it on the trailer.

2. Towards the end last season he was having trouble starting it, so with it lying over the winter i recon we are going to struggle to start it.

Now this is where you can help, he is a penny pincher and refuses to spend money on it if he is going to be changing it, he recons a grease of the cable and it will be fine. Is this usally the case or is a new cable reqiured?
Is there anyway of running the boat up while it is still in his drive so as to guarentee it is going to start? Can you start it without baffles?

Cheers.

Buy a new cable. You can spend weeks with various devices trying to squeeze oil into it and finally you will give up and buy a new one, so do it now and save the agro.
I think boats are a bit like cars, take them away from original spec and the resale value plummets. Stick with the gas guzzler.
Yes you can start in on the drive. Disconnect the water inlet at the pump and refit a plastic (clear) one of the same diameter. Have a large bucket of water on the drive with a hose pipe going into it and your plastic pipe in the water. You may need to prime the water pump first but after that you can start the engine and watch the water go through.
You will flood the drive with the exhausted water.
For easy starting use one of those Halford cans of "easy-start". Spray into the carb and bingo.
best of luck
David

Cheers David,
I have tried telling him to get a new cable for all its going to cost, but he refuses.

I just don't want to waste all of saturday getting his boat sorted and not having anytime left to enjoy my new boat.
Easy- start sounds a good idea.

Cheers...

<font color=blue>Throttle & gear cables aren't that expensive. I always carry a full set of eight on my boat. For a short run like that boat you are probably only talking 20 sovs or so.

The gear cable on my Volvo engined Mariah seized over the winter, so I took it off the boat and put one end of the inner cable in a vice. Three of us then pulled the outer off. I cleaned/oiled it up and put it back together and it worked fine. I dont know how long for though, because the boat was already sold by then.............

Re: REGAL

if you are going to buy a Regal (which by the way I think are well built) be VERY careful about who you buy from.

A certain dealer who I dealt with in the past, had a habit of selling boats and not completing the transaction. ie buyer pays dealer, dealer keeps cash and seller waits for money.

Easy Start

To have to use it once is unfortunate, to use it repeatedly would be a very bad idea. Alright on industrial engines and old Ford tractors but not on modern highly developed engines, petrol or diesel. Just listen to 'em knock!
BTW They sell a similar product down in Oz. Quite wonderfully, its called 'Start yer Bastard'!! I am assured this is true /forums/images/icons/smile.gif
