I own an S34 Sealine sportsyacht built in 2006 fitted with twin D4 225's and have encountered on several occassions major computer / electrical failiure of the engines - has any body else encountered similar problems?
Hi I hate to slate the builders rather than volvo but yes I would say that the builders dont pay attention to detail on where they install the computers, wiring routing etc, net result warranty problems and disheartened owners, all problems that with a little more thought at the build stage can be avoided.
The D4 and D6 are good units, however these modern engines still suffer the marine environment and need better electrical connections and attention to detail at build stage to prevent this.
Probably stating the b. obvious but might be worth having an informal chat with the engineer(s) who worked on the problems last time. They may well be able to point you towards possible causes and remedies if there are installation problems.
Great, thanks. I have an intermittent problem with flybridge port throttle. I can be cruising along no probs, then port engine suddenly drops a few hundred revs, but can be brought back up to revs by applying more throttle. If I then go into neutral, I can't re-engage the port gearbox in forward or reverse in the normal just in gear throttle setting (ie moved to the first "click"). However, if I blip the throttle further fwd or reverse, the engine then goes into gear.
If I re-calibrate the throttle, it's OK again for a while, but sooner or later it happens again. The synchronise function doesn't work at any time, but does on the lower helm throttles.
My questions are:
1. Does it sound like a faulty potentiometer in the throttle?
2. Are the throttles "matched" to the ECU in any way?
3. Can I just swap the upper and lower helm throttle's to check this?
4. If i'm right, do you know what's involved in changing a potentiometer?
Sorry to hijack the thread 1955 Chris, but it is sort of on-topic
Thanks Volvopaul... yes you are correct in stating that the installation can cause the problems, I'm really asking if anybody has experianced similar problems to see if the root causes are the same??
Thanks for the advice, Julie... I think I know the cause which is not actually Volvo softwear, but I'm looking to see if anybody else has experianced erratic engine operation such as engines turning themselves off, or not being able to turn them off, or a combination of both!... without me giving what I believe to be the cause! I suppose I'm looking for confimation of the same fault - just to remind everybody - they are 225 D4s in Sealine S34
