I have sea water weeping in at an internal flange where my portengine exhaust riser connects and passes through the hull into an external GRPexhaust duct, see images:

External GRP exhaust duct can be seen here, albeit starboard side of course:

Nick Seabridge is trying to source a new exhaust flange forme, but I wondered if anyone had any images of the duct and/or flange taken froman F43, the following shots are taken from a smaller Sealine boat, which showsthe general arrangement:

I intend to cut the external duct mid-way and remove theforward section, replace the flange and refit the duct and repair/re-glass andgel-coat the join once complete.

Any help/info or images from anyone that’s done this on anF43 would be much appreciated!

Stainless Steve in Lymington will make this for you from a pattern if you can bring it back to the UK.

Sealine had there own fabrication shop on site, or you can try Manuflex or Halyard who also make there own parts ordered from most UK boat builders. Nick would engage someone like these companies.

Hi Paul, the problem is the boats in Spain so it would mean weeks ashore removing, returning to the UK to get this fabricated, then returning/fitting. Nick is trying to source the original flange for me, if so, I can do the job in a few days. I will pick-up a new exhaust elbow and riser duct too whilst I'm at it. Is the Vetus exhaust hose best or original spec?

Pictures would help if anyone has them showing inside the exhaust duct.

Otherwise, I will have to remove it and will probably get it fabricated in Spain.

Just bumping this back up, my F43 is 15 years old so expect I will need to do the starboard side flange at some stage :( Anyway, if anyone has done this before on an F43 please let me know.

Many thanks

Have not done it .
Vetus do a 6 inch stainless steel exhaust flange and smaller ,some with bends ,off the shelf
Cutting the fibreglass and making good looks drastic !

Will it be possible to unbolt it from the inside after removing the rubber pipe .Hand access to the bolt heads on t,other side ?Even shorten the metal inside pipe it's knackered anyhow ,cut it down where it's split for easy access .
If not then --- Maybe holding the bolt tips by attaching two smaller and locking off nuts to grab at the tip ,
When removed knock back the flange recover it from the section .
From the inside of the boat offer up the new one to align and redrill the holes .
Then push it up from the outside ,slide it up ,drag it up etc -put your hand inside (mate ) align it -gunk /gobb it up bolt it on
-may be spot weld the bolts or simply place your hand 6 + inch Dia ? from the inside of the boat to stop them spinning while t,other hand or mate tighten s em up .-Then re attach the black rubber pipe
With that off surely you could reach down from the inside ?
Not convinced you need to chop up your boat ?

Hi john
We had a leak similar to this on our F43 , I found that the leak was coming from the bolts, I carefully undid them repacked and retightend them, did this with boat in water , but was a job to get access to the one under the steps , if was to attempt this again would defiantly have the boat lifted,

Thanks for suggestions chaps - I have found the following image which shows either a repair to, or cut, exhaust duct on an F43, there's not a lot of room inside the boat to manoeuvre, so I reckon its still best to remove (whole, or if not in part) the grp exhaust duct if at all possible. The exhaust riser and flange pipe are 5" (125mm):

Did you get this sorted, I had the same problem, you will need to cut a hatch in the exhaust duct in the outside to replace the pipe.
I have plenary of pictures, PM me if you need any additional info

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the images. Would you mind if I posted them up so that others may benefit?

If you have any more images of the actual metal flange/elbow once removed, similar to those that I posted above, they would be useful. Also, did you replace or repair the fitting? If replaced I would be interested to know where you sourced a new one or where you had it fabricated.

Once again thanks for taking the time to respond - much appreciated.

John

did you find some new stainless exhaust bits ? pics look like a good solution to access the ends

No not yet.

My flange sealed-up OK, I intend to inspect it internally when I replace the exhaust hose shortly, then if I think it needs it, I will do the repair later this year when on the hard for AF. I will post images if I do. I expect I could get it welded if the elbow is perished or can remove and have one fabricated locally. I reckon it is probably the result of exhaust gasses mixing with sea-water resulting in an acidic solution at the invert level of the pipe, which over time corrodes it, probably just at the bottom. Perhaps if this is the case perhaps GRP lining the bottom might help, after all, it then enters a GRP duct so should be cool enough at that point.
