Hi Everyone
I’ve just spoken to the engineer who has been working on my Sealine F43.

Yesterday he was on board, and smelt the classic “Bad eggs” smell, indicating that the batteries were over charged and so too were overheated.
He turned the battery charger off.
Can anything br done with the batteries or are they now “Scrap” ?
Sadly I thought this issue would have been dealt with by the technology, cutting charging power to the batteries when fully charged.
But seems not to be so ?
The batteries are traditional acid type.
I would welcome any comments/advice.
Thanks in advance.

You are right. If it is a proper marine charger then it would be programmed to reduce the charge to a float of around 13.4v when the battery is fully charged so avoiding just what you describe. Almost certainly the charger fitted by Sealine would be of this type. Suggests a failure of the charger which surely your "engineer" would have been able to work out for himself before he switched it off. Difficult to say whether the batteries ar shot. They need testing.

There is the popssibility of a cell dead in a battery such that voltage is always low encouraging charger to bring voltage up. The charger may be doing what it is meant to do. Check batteries for voltage after separating them electrically. You may find it clear what problem is. Or if batteries look ok it may be the charger has gone berserk and is over charging. As to likely health of batteries now. Check water level. Then use them individually to start engine and to provide long term load. If a battery will not do what you need it is obviously throw away. They will not have benefitted by the experience but may still be useful. ol'will

Maybe the engineer was there for some work unrelated to the battery charger ?
He did the right thing switching the charger off. Best let a hot battery cool down before investigating.

Sounds like at least one of the batteries is defective but really its best to replace all batteries in the same bank.
