The thousand dollar question...!!!

Any one have any thoughts on which is best, I'm looking to buy a second hand model 2011/2013 so I won't have the luxury of any warranties etc.

I will be hopefully using her for weekends around the solent and the west country so I will need the accommodation and size, but with our climate is the Sc better than the fly bridge??

Has any one got / had either model and had any issues that I should be looking out for?

I am keen on the ease of IPS on the F42, but is the stern drive joy stick found on some SC models any use for berthing?.

Any input and knowledge of these boats would be great.

Thanks

That was my first choice but there are only 2 available at the moment so may have to wait.

There also seems to be a lot of sc42's on the market at present with higher prices?

I did, they have one at hamble point, nice boat just no storage and higher mooring charges!, also if you read the reviews they are not great compared to the F42.

they seem to have sold a lot more SC42's than the F4s's hence more on the market, perhaps after Southampton there will be a few more popping up?

I was on an SC42 recently during a boat test and it struck me just what an incredible cockpit that boat has. So much space and a clever layout, for entertaining a lot of guests outdoors it has the F42 licked. And, of course, it has a sliding roof so you do still have the inside/outside balance of a flybridge but it's less defined.

The one thing I would say is that, in my opinion, there is no comparison between the slow speed manoeverablity of IPS and sterndrives with a joystick, the latter just isn't as effective - especially in crosswinds. That being said, the SC42 will be perfectly easy to drive but you may want to rely on the traditional tactic of two throttles and a bowthruster.

Both good boats, good luck with the search.

Jack

Thanks Jack, i have heard that about the stern drives a lot, the boat i have seen has it on so i presume it would help get me out of a tricky situation but better to get the skill of using the engines to berth.

one other question is the sc42 noisy compared to the f42 whilst helming, as you are sat right above the engines compared to up high on the F42?

Two main issues with these boats .

Look into service costs on volvopenta IPS and see if you want to swallow that lump of money every year.

F42. Seek advise on forward and side screen issues leaks and problems with forward structure support for flybridge, I was hearing one guy has forked out over 40k in repairs as it has serious design flaw, no warranty back up as sealine does not exist in this field.

If your not sure about either look for a shaft drive fairprinseeker.

Thanks Paul,

that is a huge worry if they have issues with the structure, the sc42 may be the obvious choice then.

the problem with the other marques around 40ft is that they do not offer the same room and accommodation and being 6'4 i need all i can get :)

i presume the ips is frightening when compared to stern drive service costs?

The F42 has a distinct advantage becuase you are driving from either an elevated helm position, away from the thrum of the engines, or at the lower helm where you can shut the doors and most of the engine noise out.

From my quick drive, though, I don't remember the SC42 being noisy.

That's interesting Paul. When it was launched I commented to salesman at a boat show that the designers had done something very odd and unprecedented in (apparently) making a trapezium each side to support the flybridge, with the bonded side windows apparently providing structural triangulation. IE the window glue feels a stress every time the boat hits a wave and there is weight forward on the flybridge. I was pretty horrified; the salesman said it as ok (not that I was convinced). Every other builder I can think of uses a vertical support to create a rectangle not a trapezium, with the bonded windows doing no more than providing a small steadying force so to speak

I have the SC42, really enjoy it great social boat with loads of space up and down. We often have 8-10 onboard and it never feels like a squeeze. No problems with it except some very minor new boat niggles. i have the drives with joystick and v v easy to handle (although I tend to give really blowy days a miss). Even with the roof closed it feels a very open boat, not sure how that would work for you in the UK. The covers are well designed and I am now quick at putting them on/off but only use them when leaving the boat, I personally wouldn't enjoy the boat with the covers on. feel free to PM if you want any other info

Hi Ngm

I'm looking at one with the joy stick also, good to hear you find it helpful as so many people have said they can't move the boat if there is a breeze. Where are you berthed. . Have you had any issues with leaks etc I had a sc35 which was like a sieve and leaked lots!!
