Hi all,

Having recently resolved to keep my Targa 34 in Sant carles for this year, I have just received a few offers that I'm giving serious consideration to. If I do accept them, I will be looking for a new boat very soon.

I would like an older (limited funds - maximum say £125k) larger FB boat in the order of 40-45ft, it will need to get me between SCM and Mallorca etc., this is also the largest boat I could get on my existing finger berth. Any suggestions welcome!

There seems to be some very nice Sealine 420 Statesman boats up for sale - do any of you have any experience of these boats, one is called Rhiannon?

How reliable are they?

Any problem areas that I should be looking at?

Any advice as always mush appreciated.

many thanks

John

Boat

John, You might be able to just get into a late 90's Princess 40. It's a nice twin head boat and there's one on for 159K Euros at MGM in Ireland with a/c as an example. A little far from the Med, but at least it gives you an idea of what is possible. In this market you would probably have a shot at it with your budget. Good luck.

Sorry John, can't help you with the 420. However, we have owned 8 different Sealines, and can tell you they are generally OK boats. The 420 is, I believe, a pretty substantial boat, capable of making good offshore passages in reasonable weather. Obviously a good survey is necessary, as with any boat of that age.

Good luck

We had a 1997 420 in the Med for 6-7 years and found accomodation and performance acceptable without being great. Major issue we had was a troublesome starboard muffler which failed 3 times. once in the middle of the bay of Huelva and took 4 hours on one engine to get home. We since returned the boat to UK and sold it in PX for a Targa 43. Not sure where it is now. Feel free to PM me if you want any further info.

Sent a PM that might be of interest.

Suffice to say we bought an F44 and happy with it so far. The 420 is very similar. The muffler issue referred to by Kaste could obviously apply to any boat equipped with such an item. Possibly more of a problem for Vetus as it's them that probably made it! Hmmm I think ours are the same - something to watch out for!

From my research before buying, there were no negative structural or performance issues associated with any of these boats, so it's really down to the age old dilemma of does the boat suit your needs and is the condition satisfactory relative to the price paid.

Thanks guys, if anyone else has owned a 420 please keep it coming!

Andy: Thanks for the PM - I have replied!

Eddie: Yes I saw that SQ43 - didn't like the colour/style of the seats much, the slightly newer ones have the rounded ones but I have sent them an email!

Don't know what to buy yet, considering:

SQ43
Phantom 42
Sealine 420 or F44 (I do like the design of these boats) - Typical fuel consumption?
Princess 420
Targa 48 - mind you I would need a 15m berth and these are now scarce at SCM

Still its great fun looking around again, I have sent out loads of enquiries this week!

Thanks once again for all your advice/comments - much appreciated!

John
