Son-in-law thinking of buying a sealine 285 what should he be looking for prior to having it surveyed?Been professionally fitted with FordFSDT1 diesel engines.Looks neat and tidy.

I personally would be very nervous about buying a boat with "non standard" engines, and by that I mean an option that the manufacturer never offered rather than just not the original engines.

I'd personally be even more worried about marinised engines not originally designed for marine use.

My concerns on both fronts would be regarding reliability, performance, weight distribution and resale.

Great choice, we got one last year and have no regrets. We looked at quite a few before getting ours, never seen one with the ford engines though so make sure you are happy with the performance.

They seem to be pretty strong boats, it would be interesting to see which petrols engines it was fitted with as if it was the most powerful option it may have been driven hard. A good place to look for stress in on the hull is inder the rear bearth and in the cockpit lazarette look for long cracks and bulk head joints that have moves and broken away. Every one we looked at had crazing/cracking to the gel coat where the anchor locher is bonded to the hull, some were worse than others and showed up far worse on the older boats with the grey stripe.

Good luck!!

Lancing

Recognised as about the best around, should be good as long as they are right for the boat.

Same as above I'm afraid, if the engines had been replaced with, for example, a pair of Volvo diesels of a type originally fitted to this model then fair enough, anything else would concern me.

How much is the boat anyway? That would clearly have a bearing on the decision...
