Hi all,

I'm off to East Mersea this weekend, I keep hearing that its a good place to get seafood, so does anyone have any recommendations of where to go?

Cheers
Darren.

You won't find many seafood restaurants in East Mersea, but there are plenty in West Mersea. You can eat at The Victory pub, The Coast Inn, West Mersea Yacht Club or a new seafood restaurant (whose name escapes me) which is on the harbour front - it's a black weatherboard building. All serve good food and at reasonable prices. If you are around during the day then you can eat at The Company Shed, again on the harbour front. It's not a restaurant as such but simply serves up fresh seafood, pretty much straight off the boat.

The new restaurant is called something like 'The west Mersea Oyster Bar'. its opposite the Pub on the way in (past the house boats) I looked in last weekend it does all the seafood things plus it serves wine, and hot food etc etc. the famous 'Company Shed' is just past the lifeboat station and is a fishmongers, but you can also eat in for a small supplement. they supply plates, glasses, brain surgeons picks for getting the meat out of crabs etc. they allow you to bring bread and wine and NOTHING else. in fact they get quite handbaggy if you bring salad etc. I take a good mayonaise and some chilli vinegar for the superb fresh oysters (chilli flakes in white wine vinegar and good pinch of salt) They are very busy and shut at 5pm last orders 4pm - the drill is to ignore the queue at the door they are mostly doing take away's go to the end of the counter and ask to be put on list, go up the road to the pub and come back in 45 mins approx wait outside for your name to be called, they run ot of dressed crabs quite quickly so order an undressed one and pick away, everything except shell is edible even if it doesnt look like it!
