My ancient seafarer echo sounder is on the blink again. Before I deep six it and replace it with something more modern, does anyone know if it is possible to test the transducer in situ with a multimeter? I'm guessing this is where the fault lies - only reads at shallow depths on full gain, lots of interference from the engine etc.

any views gratefully received.

I thought they were suposed to blink!!!!

Seriously, have not tried to check continuity of a transducer incase it damaged its coil or whatever.
Probably the innards have gone hard or it is nolonger in tune with the head. Cant help as to which potentiometer to twiddle though, may be try them all as it needs replacing any way.

Good luck

This is one not-too-expensive option. Buy a Nasa Transducer, it will work with the Seafarer and in fact from somewhere in the mid 80's onwards Nasa made all Seafarers transducers. You can buy them anywhere, but if you bought from me the cost would be £22.99 + £2.95 P&P.

When you get it on the boat you dangle it over the side and plug it into the back of the Seafarer. If you get a good reading - job done. If it's a rubbish reading you have two choices, send the transducer back for a credit (you'll lose the postage charge and have to pay one but perhaps its worth it), or buy a Nasa Target or Clipper from me with the transducer removed because you already have one.

Not being in the least technical it's my kind of testing, permits elimination of doubts for a lot less than having the local man come for £x per hour.

Is the tranducer mounted inside the hull in a (castor) oil reservoir? If so has the oil leaked away?
