Does anyone know what the sea temperature is like at this time of year ?
Does it vary much between now and June .
Deciding if we head for the beach or shopping
Weather looks good but will the water be warm enough for swiming in newton creek/east head/studland ?
 
it was very warm when we went for a paddle in Torbay on Sunday, surprisingly so... the toilet paper flotsam meant we didn't paddle for long though:rolleyes:

I think officially it is only just starting to rise from its coldest period. I believe it is at its warmest around our coast around Septemberish, and it's coldest around March.

Having said that, small, shallow bodies of water will warm up quickly in this nice weather so locally you may find it warm enough for a dip. Rather you than me though :)

It was 13.5-14.5C last w/end as I was calibrating the sensor.

yep, folk were certainly out there doing it as this video shows, taken last weekend in Colwell Bay.. swmbo panning around to capture the glorious conditions from the beach... take a close look about 18 secs in to the video, blink an you'll miss it!! the water was bloody cold when tugging the dingy back in to the water, the guy's got some balls to do what he did, albeit a little shrunken with the cold I reckon;)

According to Chimet the water temp is about 11C, though on the ebb it shows more as the warmed water exits the harbour. Needs to be at least 15C for a dip unless wearing a wet suit IMO.
 
When I were a lad, we used to swim off Brighton beach in May. I can't remember, but I must have enjoyed this. When the dangly bits started dropping, sea swimming became much more difficult. At my advanced age, I think the water has to be +20C before I'm interested. I used to windsurf when we had to wade through a bit of ice, but the wetsuit worked well. It really hurt my head when I fell orf though!!!
 
Yes I do. Here in the Baltic we have in the North (Oulu 30-80 cm of fast ice)
Further south (Gotland) 4 plus and in the southern Baltic 8/10 plus
From now tilll end of June watertemperature should normally rise by 10 degrees. But doubt thats of interest to the majority of this Forum :)
 
It was 8.9c at Alum Bay on Sunday, my granddaugther was swimming in it whilst I idly looked at the temps on the boat.

The temp rose yesterday, it was 9.0c off Christchurch Ledge....
 
Thanks for all the replies , I'l risk a BBQ & plunge @ Easthead being the most sheltered so please mind your wash and no sailing through the anchorage :)
 
Daka,

we dinghy sailors ( the ones who sail near East Head but not among anchored boats ! ) knew that Easter is the coldest time of year for water temperature, a lot colder than New Year's Day.

As Searush says, local conditions can help, East Head will be a little warmer right by the shore but as it's very steep shelving - sure you know the downright dodgy bits - I'd reckon it'll be pretty chilly.
