Anyone know if I can get the RN (week long) Sea Survival Course converted to RYA or the next time I do it get an instructor to Assess it for me?
Why? Do you need the certificate for some commercial reason?
If you've already got good training, then why worry about the RYA course? Unless the context or the content of your RN training was very different to that of small yacht sailing.
Having said that, regular training (and re-training) isn't a bad thing.
When I left the service I was able to get the official certificates (which have STCW'95 all over them - confirming compliance with the standards) by contacting the office at Phoenix on Whale Island.
As they comply with STCW'95 I'm sure you'll be fine. There may be one or two things that need to be added (then there's always the issue of in/out of date).
RORC accepted my certs in place of RYA sea survival qualifications for this year's campaign - though we agreed that the NBC was hopefully not going to be relevent!![]()
I have spoken to ex RN who is now in MARSEC. Their armed gaurds in the Pirate zone are having to get the STCW95 as well now. He says that if you have RN sea survival Cert then that is STCW95 acceptable but it must be in date.
The RYA course I did lasts for 5 years I think and obviously the first aid bit needs to be kept up to date as well.
I am sure you will have to do the the firefighting again as well.
Good luck
STCW'95 basic Training (PSSR, Fire Fighting, Elementary First Aid and Personal Survival Techniques) lasts for ever.
RYA sea Survival lasts for ever
ISAF Offshore safety training (which includes a day of sea survival )for offshore racing lasts 5 yrs
I think however its a bit unfair to say your 5 days of RN Sea Survival training were far more comprehensive than the 1 day RYA sea Survival Course, when only 1 day of your RN course was spent on Sea survival, the rest was fire fighting, flood control first aid etc.
