Has anyone done it... is it worth it?

I am a bit rubbish when it comes to engines. I know how to drive them and be sympathetic to them but no idea what bits do what and why / how.

Thinking about doing the course to get some background knowledge and hopefully help me spot any problems before they spoil the party...

any thoughts welcome.

There is some truth in the replies posted but im not going to admit where!

No boat at the moment but we do have eyes on one or two. very generous offer and sure i would learn a lot more than a day course too!

no desire to do my own servicing but would be nice to know one end of an engine and outdrive from another and know what to look for in terms of failing points before it catches us out on the water..

On the original question, I've done the Seastart course. It didn't turn me into an expert, but was enjoyable and I picked up some basics.

When we get the new boat down on the south coast I think I will get eldest son on one, he has a maths degree from Cambridge but give him a spanner & he's lost. Managed to put his hand on the hot exhaust on one of our trucks not long ago, fortunately he also has very quick reactions so no lasting damage, just a red hand for a while. He had no idea that part got hot.

I did the RYA One Day Course at Marple Top Lock Training, (???), in 2006. Learned loads and was well worth it. Took some photos of my engine at the time and got a lot of specific info on it, which was very helpful when problems occurred crossing Biscay, or mid Med :(
