Sea Rescue

As a non-pet person I would find it bad enough to be in water let alone see a blinking great dog coming at me from on high!

Still, being saved might make me feel more disposed to the RSPSeaA /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Excellent stuff.

We were on holiday in Northern Brittany a couple of years ago, and saw some practice sessions for a competition for "chiens sauveteurs en mer". Quite a common thing over there, evidently. Mostly Labs and Retrievers, unsuprisingly. Didn't see any Saint Bernards - or helicopters.

We get treated to a touring Newfoundland Rescue Dog display once a year which is worth seeing; reportedly the group tours because the dogs are so big, loud and hungry that there are few places they can meet up and stay for more than a day or two before being asked to move on.

The newfies are remarkable and you can see how it might be a scary but effective way to be plucked to safety. I joined in a bit last year and one dog managed to pull boat plus five adults at a reasonable clip albeit not in the intended direction and with apparently a high risk that the dog would decide the best place to be would be in the boat with its owner, which would probably have had us over.

As for helicopter-launched newfies, I imagine they're buggers to winch back up and there'd be a good risk your Sea King would be towed to the nearest beach once attached /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I once read somewhere that they could be trained to swim ashore with a line [it didn't say if they could drop an eye over a bollard though].

This could be very useful to a single-hander. Imagine - you've made a mess of coming alongside and need to get a line ashore in a hurry - just send Fido. Talking of making a mess - not sure I'd care to deal with the leavings of a dog that big on a small boat!

I saw a display by a couple of Chesepeak Bay Retrievers (not sure abut the "retriever" bit) in which they combined to rescue a swimmer. Ok if the swimmer knows the routine, I suppose. It was impressive to say the least. They seem to be even bigger than "newfies".

Yes, it does seem like a well trained one could be auxillary engine, automatic MOB recovery system, and mooring mate all rolled into one, not to mention sound signalling device, cabin heater and hand towel. However, I'm nervous enough about the continued availability of ship's biscuits on even short trips without being in competition with a large dog.
