I have now spent 2 years on the Thames and 2 years at Sea in the Solent. Pro's and cons for both, but where would you rather be?

And Why?

Spain on Thurs - hurrah

Thanks Phil I'm all emotional now cos it worked "twice" but seriously in answer to the question i'd rather be on the Med but thats not going to happen for quite some time, so realistically I would rather be were I am, on Windermere. Although I quite fancy the Broads cos I had a nice boating holiday in 89 but thats too far away from Lancashire. And then again I quite fancy south coast Cornwall maybe. I think by now you get the picture "any bloody were as long as its on a boat"

Like you we were on the Thames and now on the sea.

It's horses for courses;

jump on the river boat; brain in neutral and sooooo relaxing; not a lot to do bar look at and enjoy the scenery and the wildlife, plenty of places to moor up for night with an abundance of pubs (the Flowerpot, Shillingford Bridge, the Rose Revived, to name but a few;) chat to others at the locks - we viewed the river as an extension back garden. Get above Osney bridge and it was idyllic.

One drawback was the 6 month river boating window April to October and the licence costs

Jump on the yacht; consider weather, tides, wind direction, hazards, channel 16, continuously alert; but made more friends sailing and a greater sense of personal achievement.

both are good fun; we'll stick with the sea - shame I've got to work or I could do both!!

River,

Private Mooring on the Thames with water, electricity and telephone all charged at normal rates.

A boat with a garden ... Perfect....

well not in the winter...

sea...

Sea is best....(IMHO)

Loads more places to visit in a weekend than the river, no more left or right only.

Option of visiting rivers easily in Solent.

Can go fast

No locks

No BSS

No licence fee

Against though are higher mooring fees, burn more fuel, have to hose the boat down after each trip (although I like that bit!) and getting caught by bad weather.

M

Blue water, not brown

Definitely the sea, PhilF. I spent a year on the Thames and after we'd got fed up going left to the pub and then got fed up going right to the pub, we spent the rest of the season schlapping down the Tideway at every oppurtunity just to give the boat a blat at full throttle. The only time we've been back since, we got shouted at by a lock keeper for not displaying the boat's name on the bow (dont they have anything better to do?) and some lowlife lobbed a brick at us from a bridge
However, I can understand the attraction of river boating particularly on a scenic river like the Thames. Maybe the ideal situation is to have a house on the Thames with its own mooring and use the boat on the river during the winter months and them move the boat to the sea for the summer months
However, I think it also depends where you base yourself on the coast because I think its much better to base yourself say in the Solent where there's loads of places to go and plenty of sheltered boating if the weather is a bit naff rather than somewhere like Brighton where there's nowhere to go and you cant even go there if there's anything more than a F5

Oi! Brighton isn't too bad for when you are starting out. You can still go along the coast with little marinas to pop into and little areas to explore. It is no way as busy as the solent and you don't have to pre-book the pub! Ok it can be a little on the rough side at times, but I would say that makes it a little more interesting than always having a flat sea - even SWMBO thinks so now - finds it boring if flat! /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Spent two years on Thames. Sea is far preferable, though if I was retired and had all the time in the world, would probably have a boat on the river as well as a coastal based one

I like being on the Broads because I can just bumble along the river looking at the scenery or take to the open sea for a bit of fun out there. Best of both worlds. And they are both pretty damn good.

No Locks

Oh and No locks.

Mind you, it was entertaining watching the hire crafts getting stuck on weirs (spelling/forums/images/icons/frown.gif), lock gates, up banks in peoples gardens.... etc.... /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Other bloke, and woman

Also suspect you'd better get ready to say sorry when PaulineB reads this thread: I've never been assaulted with a pair of Manolo Blahniks but I suspect you're about to find out what it's like /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif
