Sea-Me active radar reflector

I've not had any first hand experience with these bits of kit.

However I understand that radars transmit on one of two frequencies (called X and Y band, I think) and the Sea-Me transponder only responds to one of these frequencies. A traditional radar reflector is still required to respond to the other frequency.

I presume the mounting position will also need to be outside the range of the scanner - presumably above or below.

I stand to be corrected on the above info!

A good comparison exercise was carried out approx 1 year ago - by I believe PBO, but just could have been Sailing Today.

Outcome was that they are a good piece of kit but judging from the photos of the (commercial) radar screens, the radar paints were hardly any better than those returned by a properly mounted octohedral reflector on a Nimbus.

On the other hand, anything whatsoever would have to be better than one of those tubular (Mowbri) so called reflectors.

Its X-band and S-band and the majority of ship's in open water use the latter so it makes one wonder if the Sea-me is worth it however well it works.
