Basically, the sea cocks on your boat are to protect every thing on the inboard side from flooding your craft in case of failure of hoses, pump case cracking etc etc.

ie once the sea cock is closed no water ingress should occur - allowing you to dismantle the water system (engine cooling / toilets / etc etc) without lifting the vessel out of the water.

It is good practice to operate these valves frequently to ensure they work in an emergency. There is nothing worse than to find water flooding into your bilge and the relivant sea cock is seized 'open'.

How often would you close the sea cocks - every time you cruise, when you leave the boat, when left for an extended period, or only when you want to carry out maintenance? I close the sea cocks during the winter because I only use the boat occasionally, but not during the summer cos they're a pain to get to.

we used to leave them open all the time, but now close the heads inlet when underway, as water pressure seems to have a habit of forcing its way past the pump and flooding the khazi. The outlets (heads and macerator) are usually closed, unless they're in use.

The cooling water seacocks are always open, but closed and reopened every time we go out to remove and check the strainers.

I operate the engine ones each time I visit..... They are always left open.

To my shame the toilet ones have been moved only once this year as they are a swine to get at - you know remove galley sole plate then lie flat and pull yourself half into the space that holds the grey water tank and black water holding tank etc etc.

These are quite small diameter compared to the engine raw water but could still outrun the bilge pump I would guess

Re: sea cocks electric

Graham I did eventually fit electric seacock to our khazi system. Absolutely brill, can recommend them. Vetus. Clever part is that the motorisation unit can be rmoved with a click, no tools, so you can get to the ball valve and operate by hand if you need to. The switch is a standard Carling so you can make it fit in the dash switch banks, hence it looks like original equipment
