sea cave(s) near Macleod's Maidens?

anyone know of any? going to take a look from the land next week (and sea, if calm enough to sail a GP14 there from Bracadale, but i doubt it...)

a long time ago my dad was surprised by a fishing boat there (to be fair, he was @rse over t1t over the transom pulling a rope off his prop), then more recently spoke to a fisherman who said that they use a cave there for their fishing gear on occasion...

souds interesting. anyone know? good pics of the cliffs from the sea around there?

from their blog/looking at 1:25000 OS map there are quite a few caves E of Idrigill point

if the weather's reasonable i'll take some pics and post back... cheers

Just for interest, we've launched a few times from the beach at Harlosh. Jetty at Struan and slip at Caroy both have issues. Probably the best bet is Portnalong, but we haven't used it ourselves since it's a long drive from home.

Many thanks for local info. We're staying in bracadale. What is the issue at struan jetty? Owner of cottage we are renting said that the jetty should be ok, but they were fixing it or similar, but looks like should be able to launch off top jetty at HW, then stick dinghy on beach/foreshore nearby (got a launching trolley)

Will figure something out... If you see a wee white gp14 with blue deck being sailed badly give us a shout, cheers
 
Whereabouts around Bracadale are you staying? It's a pretty big loch!
Harlosh will be less tidally constrained. The Struan jetty is not really as good as it might appear, IMHO.
If you're up for a bit of trail-sailing, Stein is also a great place to launch as there is a good slip and some islands within a short sail, plus the coral beach just round the corner. Portree is OK but you don't want to be at low tide, and winds can be flukey.
A trip across to Raasay is fun, either from Portree or Sconser.

Wish I could join you for a wee cruise in company but no doubt work will get in the way!

To be honest looks like not much boaty stuff for mon and tue (windy), so can scout a bit then

Thanks for the suggestions. We'll likely just stay in loch beag nr the cottage, young kids etc. if its not wild i may go a bit further when they are sleeping :-)

Struan jetty was great for launching, tho you cannot use it for about 2h either side of LW. There was a handy bit of foreshore nearby that someone else had laboriously cleared in the past of rocks. 5mins of shifting accumulated seaweed from a narrow path made it useable again.

sailed over to port n long, gesto bay, ullinish and ardtreck points etc. it was pretty cold still (for kids). only took the camera out one morning;

Caroy slip looked OK, tho again not useable at LW. launching at Camus Ban looks reasonable as long as no swell (tho surprisingly none when we had a look). and Port na Long as you said. lovely corner of the world :-) Thanks
 
Fantastic, well done! Sorry if I was a bit too wary about the Struan slipway. I've always been a bit put off by the big drop at the end...
Glad the weather came good for you. Let me know if you're up this way again, a Wanderer and a GP14 ought to be a good match for a cruise in company...

Not at all, but i was hopeful i would only use it twice...

We will be back, it was a lovely spot to stay, will give you a shout.

Oldbilbo - thanks! I'm never that certain if other folk will like my pics. They never quite capture how magical it was out there that morning :-)
 
It's quite some years ago now, but I was able to anchor off, in a flat calm, and go into a couple of these caves in a rubber dinghy. One just went in and in until the slight swell made it too scary. The other is a sort of tunnel, open at both ends, with a another entrance coming in halfway along from the side. This last one has a foor of boulders, and you can walk in part of it at LW. Interesting place to explore.

didn't get near, embarrassingly. was hoping to walk/run from ramasaig to orbost via idrigill point, but totally failed to do any of that route.

or was hoping to sail over, but didn't manage that either...

had a lot of fun sailing the dinghy tho, and trying out the idea of launching it and dumping it on the foreshore. the dinghy however barely moves with a launching trolley slung underneath, it seemed like a good idea at the time :-)
