Took A trip to Jersey on the Sea Cat from Poole a couple of weeks ago, too rough for our boat, didnt fancy the conditions.

Never been on one before, they have plotters all over the public areas showing the usual stuff like position and speed. This thing was doing over 40 knots!! about 42 to be precise! how the hell do they get something that big to go so fast! must have some serious big lumps under the bonnet!

And to all those sports boat owners, its unlikely that you can outrun it!

The boat is not a "Sea Cat " as this is a trade name of Hoverspeed/Sea Containers its correct name is a wave piercing catamaran. Built by Incat Tasmania and operated by Condor Ferries, Condor Express and Condor Vitesse have each four of 20 cylinder Ruston turbocharged diesel engines of about 7500hp each Condor 10 has four of Ruston 4800 hp each. Each engine drives a Lips Waterjet.

Not many MPG , Speed 38 to 42 knots.

Had a look round one of the engine rooms once, Condor Express it was. Each hull has two 10,000 hp engines driving a water pump through a gearbox. Consumption at 40 knots is 150l/mile.

Each hull also has two 375kva gen sets.

Just for a simple old sad git, is this the same Ruston, that made the engines in Ruston Bucyrus diggers many years ago? Saw one a week or two ago by Fort Victoria slowly rotting away and it bought back some memories. Paul

On trials the Incat ones typically hit close to 50 knots. Famously, one of them during trials ran onto rocks at the mouth of the Derwent River (Hobart where they are built). Fortunately it did not go straight over the top and into the water on the otherside as talking to some who were on board it would have gone straight to the bottom.

We have had them operating here across Cook Strait for many years now (both Incat ones and others) - while cannot handle the same conditions as the displacement ferries they are only very rarely stopped by the sea conditions.

The US Navy is now using the Incat ones for fast response - they look very ominious and exotic beasts all in grey.
