I will be having a leisurely sail from Portsmouth round to the Thames/Medway. I prefer traditional harbours or anchorages but am not averse to a decent marina. Any suggestions would be welcomed for places not to miss also places to avoid!
Is Ramsgate still dog unfriendly?

Dogs have been permitted in Ramsgate for a couple of years now.

The only 'open' anchorages that come to mind between the Solent and North Foreland are at Dungeness and in the South Downs just off Deal Pier. It is possible to anchor in the outer harbour at Dover, however the town itself has little to reccomend it. Once round the corner there are plenty of choices in the Swale and Medway.

For a first stop, you could come up river to SYC at Shoreham, if not too near! The town centre is right at the club and the (drying) visitors pontoon offers walk ashore mooring.

Otherwise Rye is pretty.

In the right weather, Eastbourne bay is a good overnight anchorage, but that is unlikely this year!

Pop into the Swale and up into Conyer Creek Marina .Nice little informal place at around £15.00 a night.

If you cannot dry out, then Newhaven might suit. It's about 55 or 60 miles from Portsmouth and is about half way to Dover. Not the prettiest place but easy all weather, all tide access.

I did this trip the other way round, completing it only last week. In my case Faversham to Poole. All single handed.

Leaving Oare Creek just off the swale, I chose to pass Ramsgate and go straight to Dover the first day, though Ramsgate is worth a visit. I logged 43miles that day. Dover marina was comfortable but I left the next morning for Brighton. That was 65 miles and was too far. I could have stopped at Eastbourne or even Newhaven but the sun was shining .... Brighton has everything you need and too much for most really. I left my CO26 there for a week then left last Wednesday for Cowes, then on to Poole the next morning.

In your case, the nearest marina to make for really after Selsey Bill is Littlehampton. A tidal entrance and not very many places if you have a fixed keel unfortunately. Shoreham is a possibility I suppose, but Brighton is next unless you press on to Newhaven, which I suspect you would like (so I am told anyway). Add 5 or so to Newhaven. Brighton - Cowes was 47 1/2 miles so about 43 from Portsmouth I guess.. Dover next maybe unless you anchor to the east of Dungeness - it looked a good spot to stop as mentioned above, then Ramsgate, then round North foreland and your'e heading west.

Its not the most enticing trip unless you want to move your boat to its new home port as I did. Much nicer going west!

Leaving Solent for the Medway tomorrow and will stop at Eastbourne and Ramsgate, weather permitting, I would agree with Rye as a stop over if you can take to the soft stuff, also how about a venture up the Kentish Stour to Sandwich? Or anchor in pegwell bay?
Would recommend Ramsgate as I love the Belgian Cafe (next to peters fish factory)

Is that Swale marina at Conyer? My memories of that place were with a 2'6" draft and some neaps we didnt even float
