The discussion on the proposed "Scuttlenet" continues with some very valid points being made. Snowleopard is conducting an interesting survey and the results so far indicate that more people use Marine band (or at least have Marine band sets /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif ) and a lot of people would like to use it for "chat" as well as position reporting/posting on the forum, for the benefit of those back home.
The fact that more people use Marine band was a surprise for me but is not a problem because the hope is that we will have a frequency in both bands. However the essence of the proposal is that Scuttlenet should be a way of letting those back home, who do not have access to an SSB, know how you are getting on and that you are still alive, via this forum. There is no way you could ever STOP people from using it for chat, nor would I want to but my feeling is that the initial purpose was something NEW and a useful facility and should take precedence. There is nothing wrong with "chat" but it tends to be less than riveting to those not involved, and would be downright annoying if you are just trying to get through with a quick position report.
I think the best way round this would be that the more garrulous users should use Scuttlenet only to make contact and then set up their chat on another frequency or at another time. 1800 would primarily be the time for progress reporting.
Your thoughts?
Paul.
