Fantastic weather this w/e but all that scum/algae - whatever it is in the water - looks pretty horrible. Does anyone know if it is safe to swim in? I was, however, able to clearly see the outline of the bow wave on the hull when I got back to port. It needed a brush to get it off!

It's the start of summer. Several times a year you'll get a plankon & algal bloom. I've dived in this loads of time with no ill effects. The scum on the surface is mostly algie.

It's generally safe but I wouldn't eat any.

Of more importance is all the scum blocking the cooling water strainer. Mine was full when I checked it yesterday altough the water was still flowing.

I've swum (swimmed, swam??) in it for years with no ill effects. The extra toes on both feet have proved an advantage.

Algal bloom has alas become a fairly regular thing in the northern Adriatic in the past few years. No-one's quite sure why yet, but it did occur in past centuries too so it's not totally our (man's) fault. For once. It's nasty and makes i impossible for fishing boats to do their thing, but it's not toxic or anything. Just slimy and looks as though a mass of whales have been running colds.

This was very noticeable last week when I went from Chi to Newtown. East Solent was very bad but it seemed to disappear west of Cowes.Odd. I was desperate for a swim but no way Jose. My newly polished hull now has a new brown boot-top!.

Hi Talbot!

Yes!! Definitely agree! Still got loads of 'em at home, but sadly haven't read 'em for years. Not throwing them out though ... 'cos I might!

Good sailing!

Lucky devil, I dont have any of them left. I read most of them at the local library (and a lot of the Edgar Rice Burroughs mars books as well)
